Syrian Girl is a pro-Assad (partially, even though her family was part of the opposition). not sure about her assessment of the situation, but man she is gorgeous!!

Assad has behaved like a brutal dictator, but he has also protected some ethnic and religious minorities. When the U.S. drew its first "red line," I was relieved that Obama chose not to intervene immediately, because doing so would simply strengthen ISIS and its ilk. Sad to say, our Mideast intelligence remains greatly inadequate to make intelligent policy decisions in Syria, even now.

The Syrian Christians, about 10% of the population, are very pleased with Assad. He lets them live.

Because it skews the extent of their actions. Dig thru the cases of milosevic and Saddam.
I've spent a career dealing with the labelling of victims whilst atrocities keep occurring.

xcon, not bad points, but unlike saddam etc, assads never been too interested in rolling over for any western power. yeah hes smiled for the camera, but hes been so firmly in the fold of both iran and russia he chose his side long ago.

i did give you only half a reply tho; ethnicity or religion is never a valid factor to define an abused population by as its near to always just a cover for other reasons. when it comes to dealing with the nastiness, its what a population functions as thats relevant. yeah the media loves it when christians, yazidis, kurds, semites, shias, hazarda, whatever make convenient headlines, but 100% of the time, on the ground, its a spectrum of a population not that easy to define. always theres a few there in there and almost always the christians, yazidis etc are far from unified as a group. calling a group one thing instantly renders the other element a grey element. plenty of people quietly get wiped out because the world is focused just one increment off and the press too shallow to show this.

that said the reverse is also true, just not when used by a shallow media. somewhere like syria 'chrisian' also means 'a powerful demograph in damascus', 'kurd' also can mean strategic land links to persian or US held territory, 'yazidi' can mean the mountain high ground.
the difference is the popular media doesnt mean this.

i spend a lot of time in places that are not as black and white on assad as western media is. elsewhere hes often portrayed as an independent but strong willed leader who keeps to himself and quietly controls a second rate middle eastern state. hes portrayed as unpleasant but not evil, while he drops chlorine from helicopters he still keeps the mail service going.

russias presence in syria go back to the cold war and the checkerboard divisions of post ottoman/post colonial middle east/asia minor. in the soviet era, syria was an island of non-US influence not too far from the soviet unions the-borders.

xcon, correct re israel - to the degree that israel supported iran in the iran/iraq war (yeah yeah as did the US covertly, another thread perhaps...).

re the map above; imagine it cold war style; all the red commie bits encroach much much further. no less with iran, like now, having a volatile relationship with both sides.

It's the same reason we will be attacking Iran. Support Israel. I've been seeing it coming. Like this guy spells out. http://kurtnimmo.blog/2018/08/17/matt-drudge-prepares-maga-crew-for-war/

This is the sh#t that was happening before we invaded Iraq. Prepare the drogges with false or misleading news reports, often via mainstream media like the NY Times and Washington Post, and once you get them all worked up, head to congress https://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/homeland-security/240572-when-dual-citizenship-becomes-conflict-of-interest and get their anger and support on paper. Then wham, look for that excuse and if you don't find it, make it up.

F*#k we're dumb. Where's Werner? WERNER, WE ARE SO F*#KING DUMB!!!!!

I believe so ^^ Nutagain! But the many expansions of the "patriot act" which changes settled law and gives the government and their now expanded police state forces much more power over us have came along after Doug passed. Most likely this crap has him NOT laughing (robustly or otherwise) but rolling over in his grave.

No one will attack Iran, it will be a lot of sabre rattling and insults but the will isn't there, jeezuz there isn't even the will to fight in Yemen or Niger.
Taking on Iran would be easily the biggest commitment since Korea. They're not a tin pot shanty state isolated and contained. Nor are they brainwashed and backwards despotic.
That said ramping up leadership changes in both Iran and Israel wouldn't be a bad thing...

unless there is another "pearl harbor" event, which can easily be arranged. :(
