Of all the recognizable names in climbing that I've met in real life, my vote goes to Gunks local - Dick Williams. Most people imagine him as the bad-boy Vulgarian who climbed Shockley's nake, back in the day. But here he is, half a century later, still crankin away doing FA's, climbing hard, writing incredibly well-done guidebooks and heading a trailwork crew every Sunday during the season.

Timmy O! He is quite possibly the goofiest climber ever, always having a great time.

These two Spanish kids (or maybe they were Italian) we picked up hitchhiking in the valley a few years ago. They were getting ready to start their first attempt on El Cap and they were stoked to the max. They were excited and thrilled by everything around them.

Hope they made it.

royal robbins, because of things i've read about him (some similar things in our background.) he came to speak in one of my classes last semester. i was too shy to go talk to him aftward, but it was enough just to hear him speak. also, he seems like a perfect gentleman.

Yeah Mike.

So glad you met Charlie Porter. So Charlie had all the gear for the "Shield" laid out on a tarp with 40 rurps. Yep that's 40 rurps.

No one has ever up till that time has taken 40 rurps on a wall. So I go "hey Charlie maybe they're knife blade cracks up there?". Nope he says, they're rurp cracks. "You coming kid" he says to me?

Sheeit I think. He wants me to go up there with him and I'm scared sh'tless. I slither away quietly.

But then again there are to many best climbing personalities, too many to list I learn from everyone, even you Mike. You're a great guy.

A post like this reminds me of how great the climbing community was/is.

I know it was better. I have had my share of fun times. I know that there are some great times to be had by the future generations.

But... Come on... Who of the good/great climbers of this and the next generation can possibly hole a candle to any of those pictured above. Nowhere near the personality of even one of those listed above can be found today. Or, at least I have not run across one yet.

Those pictured are truely rare.

Keep it going, and cheers to all of you who make this time a great time to be in.

Nice words for sure.
Poignant too.

I do think Jason Kiehl cultivates quite an expressive personality.
