An interesting read about a schisty problem on Everest, perhaps to be solved by a methane producing generator system.

last year about 1200 people attempted, at about $45,000 each. thats $54million in a dollar-a-day economy to try and sort the problem. or any other problem Nepal may have. and thats just everest climbers.

the problem there isnt high altitude piles of sh#t, its the combination of local corruption and being stitched up by foreign companies.

they could have heated titanium shitters that turn the waste into graphene or zirconias if they chose to.

Beaned on Everest

The author says he worked as a guide for 30 years, he was hired to do a reality TV show then coordinated a 45 person rescue until he got beaned. I think it's fair to ask who's responsible for the crowds of noobs up there, and whether Mr. Warner may be partly to blame himself.

how long does it last

Short answer: a long, long time. Just like a compost heap, when you have moisture and warmth, the process takes less time. Out there in the wilds, you have a great variety of moisture levels and temps. Here in Wyoming, where I am, there are low levels of moisture and long winters, so fecal matter can be dug up years later—with lots of nasty pathogens still active. It would be a different story in, say, the swampy land of South Carolina. In the end, it becomes of great importance where we place our excreta. Dig down 6 to 8 inches at least 200 feet from a water source—and hide the spot well. —Buck

Russell Brice used the big blue plastic drums system when he was running his guide operation from the Tibetan side. As each drum emptied, it was filled with sewage & garbage to be hauled back to civilization for disposal. Of course, you could drive to/from base camp on the Tibetan side.

How about Mallory's turd?

I think the early Anglo mountaineers ate straight lard so I owuld doubt there's much "form after function" if you will.

It would be just as big a job to clear Supertopo of all the excrement laid down by the liberals here.

What fun for you to post a little spot of political nastiness on a non-political thread. A bit of petty-nastiness not often seen on ST.

I thought you were older than 13?

Everest Base Camp "closure/restriction"
I doubt if the main reason is environmental. More likely a business decision.
There were 3 different "base camps". You can drive to all of them, but the road does get worse.
1. At the monastery Rongpo/Rongbo/Rongbuk elev 5000m. There is also a hotel here. It looks like the new pavement ends at 5050m.
2. Tourist tent village a few miles further elev 5100m. Located on a graded area of moraine. (Large ~20 feet long canvas tents). Shuttle buses stop here. This camp is the one that is closing. It was set up each season mostly by small local businesses. Likely with poor waste control.
3. Climber base camp with expedition tents only elev 5200m. Tourists with no permit were already "not really" allowed here. Mostly Landcruiser vehicles.

The biggest reason for mostly closing #2 is just that it's easier to expand near Rongpo, gives the hotel more business and consolidates the waste problem, not a decrease. Maybe they found a more sustainable site for sewage. I might guess that having more tourists here will also make the monastery more commercial, losing more Tibetan influence. The local businesses may get more shut out by these changes.
The road was just paved in 2016, indicating far more people are planned, not less. This road goes over a ridge which is higher than 5200m. Now that it's paved, many people will stay in Tingri.
