Seems there is a ski area in Passo Sella.

Point of information: due to extreme increase in traffic on Sella Pass, there are now restrictions to number of vehicles per day allowed on the drive. This is an environmental issue and the alpine tundra is suffering from vehicle emissions. Not to mention the hoofbeat of multitudes of climbers and hikers! Not certain about the numbers, but it seemed pretty low...something around 350 cars; couldn't read the Italian as to whether this was per hour or per day.

Have you seen if they were checking permits somewhere along the route? Wonder what they'll do if you come by in the evening and the limit has been reached? I can hardly imagine they'll have people turn around to make a huge detour...

edit: nevermind, its only between 9am and 4pm, so it shouldnt be too much of a hassle

There is excellent bus service from all points in val Gardena. I haven't used it yet. I wasn't bothered by the restrictions because I drove on Sunday.
