at 10k ft density altitude this 42 lb jet powers a climb rate of 700ft/min!

MikeL, they've put it up for sale

and if you think that's hard to take, it's 300 hrs TBO ... time before overhaul.
gliders launch by bungee, winch, tow plane then soar. this one will restart ...
in TWO MINUTES! at best glide that's 300' so stay ahead of the plane dude

300 hrs TBO is pretty bogus, but for the money it ain’t half bad. It has a lot of advantages over a Rotax, except for price. If you only burn 2-4 gallons self-launching it is very attractive. And lots fewer things to go wrong vs a Rotax PLUS it gives you a big ol’ Git Outta Jail card if the thermal yer werkin’ suddenly turns on you. Been there - survived dat = moderately scary.

Been thinkin of getting back into it but not really interested in self-launching, especially if it means only 39:1 L/D.

Go arounds - you a phunny man.

Actually, kinda did one once. It wasn’t a great day, you really had to work to stay up. I found a halfway decent thermal and was really wrapped up tight in it. Next thing I know I see the ground get blotted out by a large grey mass! A C-141 Starlifter on an extended approach to March was directly below me! OK, like about 1500’ but I swear I coulda landed on him! I milked that thermal for all she was worth and high-balled it to happier hunting grounds!

OK, kids, who’s tucked into a big dust devil? We’re talking the +1000’ club?

i've reported PO's lofting dirt to 4,000' AGL. eventually, when the idea of piercing an invisible one on short final occured to me
i decided that a landing strip surrounded by dry silty source material rose in status to slightly preferable and likely okey dokey

then there was this one:
as a certified weather nerd, on duty alongside a gravel runway in the bush, i have the distinction of having filed the second alaska weather observation to include a funnel cloud. a day or so later i got a call from the national weather service. a very subdued g-man was methodically inquiring in a buttoned down way, because from time to time some disgruntled observer on his last day remarks "raining cat and dogs" or somesuch. he was on a mission to tamp down that sort of stuff. when i got all animated and assured him it was indeed a valid entry, he got all jacked up too, muffled the mouthpiece and shouted out to an anxious crowd. there we were, two pointy headed poindexters whooping it up long distance like giddy game show winners.
