Since the U.S. can't even make it into the Idaho regional high school playoffs, I'll likely side with Mexico to make it to the remaining Four. Lots of good Group games this past week......Mexico proving themselves against Germany and South Korea. Stellar! Japan and Senegal in a draw but the playing was intense. And England crushing Panama!! OUCH! And in Group R.......Ronaldo!

Sorry, but I just find soccer pretty boring to watch. Maybe the lack of pizzazz felt for it in the USA is why we don't do well at it. That will probably change over time.

I was initially rooting for Argentina but their squad seems to lack cohesion and their defensive backs were slow to keep up. And Messi seemed like he wasn't in it to win. They looked sloppy against Iceland. Columbia looks like a hot mess as well. Of course, Mexico is my pick but I think the dark horse in all this will be Portugal. Ronaldo is on fire!!

The extent of soccer with our family- My son smoked weed and played xbox FIFA for a whole summer, thought he could play for real, made the High School team, beat out several other kids who had played select soccer for years, couldn't kick with his left foot, got bored, shined the team because the surf was pumping and then we got hate mail for months from the angry soccer moms who's kids didn't make the team.

I had predicted all this when he went out for the team

Watching soccer is incredibly boring, true, but following the tournament isn't quite that bad.
I had noted in the other thread that Mexico looked pretty bad against Germany and it was the type of situation where they would probably lose 8 or 9 times out of 10, but it was their lucky day.
No such luck against Sweden, and they badly were exposed (at least I'm assuming that based on the score, I didn't watch the game). And Germany is pretty bad too, so they're done--almost seems like Germany, Mexcico, and S. Korea all should have been sent home, if that were possible. Expect Mexico to go home after the next game.

Not sure why folks are thinking soccer is boring. Average televised match is 1:45 or so, of which 1:30 is action with no commercials. American football and baseball are more like 3+ hours with 30 minutes of actual action.

Maybe you don't like soccer, but it's certainly got a lot more actual playing time in comparison to time spent on other stuff.

The more you learn about a sport and the more you care the less boring it is to watch.

Not much scoring in soccer so it’s hard to care about a ball pinging around unless you understand the offensive and defensive strategies at play.

Baseball becomes a lot less boring if you keep score (tracking every thing that happens not just home runs), and all of a sudden it’s a fast paced game.

Football is my favorite because all the action is packed into plays. Things happen really fast and you have to pay close attention then you get a break and can watch replays etc. probably good for ADD people.

I've got to go with Brazil and England in the finals with Brazil coming out on top. But anything can happen at this point. Brazil keeps getting better and better. They just need to keep Neymar from diving all of the time, what a whiner...

Argentina doesn't have the depth, Spain plays too patiently, and I think Mexico will implode against Brazil. But I will probably eat my words. Whatever the outcome, I am enjoying the matches.

I'm not so sure I'd say Brazil is looking much better. It's very hard to tell things from the Group stages. Last World Cup they looked much better in the groups stages than they did this time. But then they got completely walloped by Germany.
OTOH, while there's a handful of teams that almost certainly will get knocked out in the round of 16(Russia, Japan, Denmark), after that for the top 10 or so teams, it's pretty hard to pick any significant favorites. The only team that has really consistently played well is Croatia.

After watching them dismantle Argentina with relentless pressure, I'm for the Croatians. Agree with SteveP re: cohesiveness, and I dig how tireless their midfield is. They press the ball-handler so quickly, anywhere on the pitch. Not too heavy on the dramatics, either.

Cannot abide Mexico, one of the prime examples of constant 'embellishment' and cheap-ass ticky-tack crap behind the play.

Just don't know if Ronaldo can be denied in the end.

They should meet in the semi's and it will be a great match. Both teams are deep with talent. This has been a fun World Cup. You never know who will win until the final whistle. As for Neymar, he is an amazing player but his "dives" are an embarrassment. Hopefully the officials will start showing some yellow cards to set a precedent.

Nonsense. The only players in the Croatia squad that could get into the England squad if they were club teams are Modric and Rakitic. England has more talent, more depth of talent, and play better football. Belgium shades England on talent, Croatia is nowhere near either of the two nor France.

Here's my inexpert opinion: Croatia is MUcH better, they just about scored as I type this (off the goal bar).
But it's soccer, so England has a faint hope of keeping it tied and winning on penalty kicks. (But at least based on the butt whippin they're getting now, may be a long shot.)

England controlled the first 60 minutes of the game. They had Croatia on their heels for the first half. They barely missed a number of tries. Then Croatia seemed to pick it up in the second half. England kind of went to sleep. Croatia scored and England got completely disheveled. It has taken them awhile to start bringing themselves back. There is a 30 minute overtime. So I don't believe that they are just hoping to hang on until penalty kicks.

Thats my inexpert opinion.

Well with all due respect to our respective inexpert opinions, I stand by my assessment--I didn't see the beginning of the game, but since I've been watching, it's been incredibly one-sided, you could call if a blowout if they were playing a game where people actually scored more than once in a blue moon. First overtime period just ended-- England has been hanging onto dear life pretty much the entire time, I am sure they are praying to be able to have a coin-flip (penalty kicks).

I'd be interested in someone's opinion who has ever watched a complete soccer game (not me), as this just seems like an incredibly one-sided affair.

I was mostly reacting to the contention that Croatia was much better. It was a good game until England went flat. The first half could have been 2-0 England, or 1-1. It just looked to me like England had more chances and won more balls. Then they just seemed to go flat. Some of that can be attributed to Croatia's forwards, who in the second half turned it up another notch and were contesting every ball, whereas England's backs were playing sloppy. Because of that, Croatia tied it up and England seemed to lose their way.

I like Croatia. They have had some tough fought matches. I didn't know if they would have enough in the tank after their win over Russia. I will root for Croatia over France. Go American Fries! Oh wait.. it was Freedom Fries. oops.. bringing politics into it.

Look I don't know much about soccer but I know something about a good old fashioned butt whuppin when I see one. Admittedly I started watching after England scored and wasn't paying that much attention anyway, but I saw enough to see that England was desperately hanging on for dear life most of the game.
Here are the relevant stats:
Shots (on Goal)
Croatia: 22 (7)
England: 11 (1)

The 22 to 11 margin is pretty much a blowout I'd say, but the real diff is between the shots on goal (which I think is the only way to score in this game, unless there's another way I don't know about).

I did see Croatia got penalized a little more so they could have cheated some, hard for me to say.

England rode the luck of the draw throughout the tournament. Has any team ever gotten so far while creating fewer chances against such marginal opposition? Ten goals out of twelve from set pieces. One goal an accidental deflection. Yeah, they demolished Panama. Meanwhile Belgium disposed of Brazil and Croatia took apart Argentina. Croatia seem unlikely to prevail on Sunday, but least it will be a final with two teams that played memorable football to get there.

Yeah, that was not really great showing from England. They did look better for much of the first half, but didn't really take enough advantage of it.
They never really played any strong teams at full strength...Belgium played their B team, and Colombia was missing James Rodriguez.
Against a Croatia team that should have been much more tired, it was England that looked like they ran out of gas and ideas.

Refs need to give more penalties for grabbing other players. The beautiful game is getting ugly.

There must not be a word in Croatian for ‘quit’. Respect!

BTW, a tip of the hat to the refs for this game and the vast majority I saw.

Croatia gets huge points for the effort they put in. And an amazing tournament for Modric.
In the end, I think France had just a little too much talent. And they were very well coached. Brilliant move to take off Kante for N'Zonzi.
Can't believe Pogba whiffed on that one at the end...he'll never see an easier chance off a free kick.

My compliments to France. Didier Deschamps has built a team where even extreme individualists like Paul Pogba takes responsibility and contributes as a team player. France deserved the title showing stability at a high level through the whole tournament. And well played by Croatia. Silver to Croatia is a more incredible achievement than gold to France...

That they got through security gives me hope for Russia.

Security personnel jumped into action and began removing the protesters -- but not before one of them managed to get a double-handed high-five from France's 19-year-old star Kylian Mbappe.
