Just sayin' here. I don't think Craig should be off the Taco. Craig has climbed, Craig is a climber, Craig has done some great stuff on the rock. Maybe Dude Craig you need to pull it in when you talk about stuff not rock relevant.

But HoMan, who are you? Why do your words count here? Just askin'.

Yo Lynne...I don't think Fry should be gone either. I never asked for it. I didn't see anything he said as worthy of a banning. I find his rants comical. His ego is his undoing. We are both climbers. I'm happy to be climbing solid 5.11 in my 50's still if that matters to you.

Fried says some crazy stuff...to me. But this is a public forum so I retort. Does not matter if my words count unless you decide to discriminate against me. Then you've become one of the crazy haters that you claim to condemn.

At least Fry is being honest. That d#@&%e Fritz claims he's a Repub one day and the flies the Lib flag the next day. Lonely old drunk fool that loves to argue. Crazy Uncle Fritz.

Most of the politard clowns here are haters of free speech. Scared, petulant little children afraid to leave their pc's. Hypocrites are the worst of the worst.

At least Fry is being honest . . . Hypocrites are the worst of the worst

HoMan,

I don’t have a problem with anonymous posting as a rule; some of them provide humor or make interesting points.

I don’t even have a problem with personal insults; I have frequently called an idiot an idiot.

What I don’t like are people making personal attacks as you just did regarding Fritz while hiding behind an anonymous avatar.

Plain and simple, HoMan whoever you are, you are a cowardly hypocrite.

ive not found the legal distinction as made to date

did you have a link?

Here's some:

https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/fighting_words

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fighting_words

The Wikipedia one cites R.A.V. v. City of St. Paul (1992) and summarizes, "the Court overturned a statute prohibiting speech or symbolic expression that 'arouses anger, alarm or resentment in others on the basis of race, color, creed, religion or gender' on the grounds that, even if the specific statute was limited to fighting words, it was unconstitutionally content-based and viewpoint-based because of the limitation to race-religion-sex-based fighting words."

So, even being "inflammatory" (i.e.: offensive and anger-inducing), even filled with racial epithets, does not necessarily qualify as "fighting words" and thus unprotected.

https://www.thefire.org/misconceptions-about-the-fighting-words-exception/

That one is particularly interesting, as it refers to "fiery speech" as upheld by the SCOTUS as protected speech.

In short, there is ample evidence that "inflammatory" speech is far too broad a category to cite "unprotected speech." The SCOTUS has repeatedly upheld extremely offensive and inflammatory (by design) speech to be protected, and it has consistently narrowed its "fighting words" exception over the years since that principle was established.

seems like a great time to point out that the asshat majority on the supreme court just approved gerrymandering.

People on this forum who hide behind avatars are cowards-period.

Most avatar users sometimes use real name at the end of heartfelt posts. That’s a good thing.

But some just sling s#it and run away.... the real cowards. You know who you are.

Mr. Fry and I never got along regarding political discourse on the Taco. (I can’t understand how a smart person like Craig can have those thoughts)

But he is a real honest to god rockclimber who this place needs if the claim of Climbers Forum is to remain true.

Could never really tell when Craig was "serious" (whatever that means on ST) and just being intentionally provocative/obnoxious. For a while I spent some time disproving some of his more ridiculous nonsense, but he'd just double down on stupid.
Nevertheless, he seemed like a pretty good person in some ways so hope he's having fun doing other things.

The hide-behind-an-avatar debate is an old one here. And, as usual, it's not as simple and clear-cut as some people would like it to be.

Because of a job situation, you might not want your current (or future) employer finding all the stupid sh#t you say on an internet forum. Fair enough. Post away. Tell us about your climbs, or what you think about beer or food or whatever. Even your political thoughts.

But to me, it becomes a problem when someone hiding behind an avatar starts posting personal insults.

That is clearly the act of a coward, and should, in my opinion, be grounds for instant banning.

And BJ: like Guyman and many others, I post using a stupid screen name, but, also like Guyman, I've often signed my real name to my posts, and have never hidden behind the avatar.

I just wanted to drop in so I could share a picture of Helena Handbasket with eKat. I find the political threads tend to undermine my respect of climbers I've otherwise appreciated, so life is better if I avoid them.

Not heroes Tut, I've been around for far too long for that. It undermines my pleasure in reading their climbing related writing once I've realized they're personally arseholes. Being good at climbing just means you're good at climbing.

You people have wrong heroes.

My heroes live on the planet Vaikuntha Loka.

No modern gross materialist's st00pid rocket can ever reach it.

They used to personally visit this planet but not no more because everyone has devolved into st00pid .....

Craig Fry is an OK dude just loves politics.......

Vaikuntha Loka -- Wow! That is a real place. Google it. Explains a lot.

Regarding the comment about homeless people. I've had a little experience with a few of them.

The comment is highly crass and shows a narrow view. If you think someone is totally wrong, talk to them some more and find out where they are coming from.

The homeless, shiftless, hopeless looser, or sadly insane are simply testing the boundries of low standards. Yes, they are victims, but they are also working at creating that victimhood usually for very good reasons.

They do not "kill themselves" because that is not how it works. Many are actually trying to kill themselves slowly in various ways but via a justifyable program.

They are on an expedition of "how low can I go?" "We'll, I haven't washed my clothes for a month. It's not so bad. Let's see if I can go another month."

I don't mean to over simplify. Each one is a very special and complex set of problems. Each requirng massive amounts of patience and compassion.

Some are total azzholes and that is why they can't get a job. No one would work with them.

The crazy and the drug addicts, they are being manufactured by a broken civilization. Broken my the super azzholes that say man is nothing but a stimulus response animal, a brain with a complex chemical reaction. They must be punished into good behavior. If that doesn't work they must be drugged into submission and conformity. (Yeah, those guys.)
