Well, actually, it was yesterday.....he’s a solstice baby. Anybody who has climbed on the McCarthy Wall in the Gunks knows what a pioneer Jim was. Additionally, he took his rock climbing skills to alpine areas with, among others, the first ascents of the Grand Traverse in the Tetons and Lotus Flower Tower in Alaska.
Jim has also been a lifetime force in the AAC serving a term as president and he was an early and vociferous advocate for more envolvment for women and young climbers culminating in Lynn Hill serving on the Board of Directors and Alison Osiius becoming the first woman president.
He remains active and is currently on a mission to video/record America’s climbing pioneers for posterity.

Congratulations and Happy 85th to Jim. Jim has been an inspiration from my very earliest days at the Gunks. Beyond his climbing accomplishments, few know of how much he has done--often behind the scenes--to help American climbing. Donini mentioned a few of his efforts in this regard but there have been many more as well. Jim is also a great story teller and it has been my pleasure to share conversations with him on too rare occasions over the years. I look forward to more in the future.

Respect!
In the mid ‘80’s we tried to get climbing legalized at Minnewaska, He tried his best to convince Nash Castro of the PIPC to give it a go to no avail

I don't think I've ever met you Jim, but that doesn't mean I can't wish you a super birthday and many, many more great ones! I love your project. Besides family and friends I believe life consists of working on a wonderful, worthy project while lining up the next one. Cheers!

The Gunks is/was always both welcoming and exciting. I blame Jim and Dan Smiley for this.
I knew good fortune was perched on my shoulder the day I first saw the Gunks.

When Donini mentioned the Gunks I thought the Birthday Boy was still there. Low and behold now in Ouray and I'm house sitting in August so I may actually meet this legend. :)

Jim believed in mentoring, and he reached out to people in need of it---it wasn't as if you asked or applied. I was one of the beneficiaries. I not only got a wealth of climbing wisdom, I was also pointed in the direction of various climbing plums that Jim thought (or knew) would suit my abilities without overtaxing my weaknesses. My small contributions to Gunks climbing were almost entirely due to Jim's mentoring.
This sharing of the secrets of the craft, out of sheer generosity of spirit, is something that forms a connection, one of many that Jim has made, that has endured the ravages of time and distance.
I've always had quite a ways to go to catch up to Jim, there being really no hope of closing the gap. Age is perhaps the least significant but most easily quantifiable of these differences---I'm ten years behind the Master and that's that.
So happy 85th Jim---and may the dude abide.

Over on the Squamish thread we are also celebrating the 85th birthday of local climber and resident Jim Sinclair. Not as well known as Jim McCarthy, he has made a significant contribution to Squamish development and lore over the last 60 years. He is our oldest living climber and knows everything about everything Squamish.
Each contributed in their own way. All of the best to both of them.
