I have been using a Milwaukee M12 Fuel roto hammer (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-M12-FUEL-12-Volt-Lithium-Ion-5-8-in-Brushless-Cordless-SDS-Plus-Rotary-Hammer-Tool-Only-2416-20/204209349?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal2_rr-_-203631756-_-204209349-_-N); for about 3-4 years. It is light enough to clip to my harness while climbing.I have been very happy with it but recently I think the hammer portion has gone bad. Anyone have to deal with this? Is it worth repairing? Warranty says 5 years with proof of purchase (will have to find the receipt), are they user friendly with the warranty?

On the same note, I have been told Ridgid (https://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-18-Volt-x-4-7-8-in-SDS-Rotary-Hammer-Kit-with-4-0-Ah-Battery-and-Charger-R86710SB/302360005); carries a lifetime warranty on there's. They have a 18v. Anyone ever use one of these?

If you have the receipt they will honor the warranty.

No receipt = no warranty

I have 8 M12 tools and 2 M18 ..... the fuels are awesome .....

Crap, The receipt I had in the case was actually for some duck decoys. Hahaha. Now I have to track down when and where I bought it.

Anyone ever try the 18v Ridgid? It is 6.2 lbs compared to the 3.9 of the M12 Fuel.

Update: I am an idiot and just needed a new bit.

I have used 3-4 bits interchangeably over the last couple hundred bolts drilled. When the M12 wasn't working I used the Bosch 36v which still had enough hammer to get through. I bought a new bit just to see if that was the issue and it was. Lesson is a sharp bit is key with the M12 since the hammer has less PSI force.

......Also, save your receipts. Still never found it.

My kid's been using the dewalt 20v lithium ion drill. Thing's a monster and super light.

Not sure about PSI. I will look at the paperwork that came with it when I get home to see if it has anything. The M12 weighs in with at 3.9 lbs I believe which is really light and with the fresh drill bit the drill time for 3/8" x 3" is less than 30 seconds. I usually use 2 1/4" on lead which bumps battery life by about 5-6 bolts compared to using 3".

With the weight I usually wear a mylon sling over my shoulder with a big pear locker clipped to my back right gear loop and clip the drill into it. Works well and doesn't pull my harness down. In the last few climbs I have wanted it to sit a little further back so I am going to add a loop of cordage further back on the harness to clip the pear biner into. This will give me more room on the gear loop, allow the drill to ride a little higher and keep it further back on my hip while climbing.

How do the rest of you hall your drill?

Beware of Bosch products.

I have a 24 volt model, but Bosch no longer makes the required batteries. I bought a couple of replacement batteries from another company, which were supposed to be compatible, but neither would charge in the Bosch charger. So I have a perfectly serviceable drill, but no batteries. There should be a law requiring companies to manufacture replacement parts.

So I'm also looking for a new drill....

juan maderito has posted how to convert your old drill to lithium batteries and use a new charger. NiCad batteries are crap and toxic.

If you bought it on a Home Depot credit card (which I highly recommmend for the bonuses/sales alone)... you don't need a receipt to return anything.

I have a buddy who doctored one of his up by running a wires from the drill into a backpack where he held the batteries to make it lighter in hand. In this scenario I would imagine you could use almost any batteries with the same volts.

^^^^^^^ Interesting suggestions. However this does not alter the fact that Bosch does not support the products which they sell. I did take one of my batteries to a local electrical business, for a quote on a rebuild. He was unable to open the back (to count the number of cells) as Bosch had poured epoxy in the screw holes. Why would they do that?
