There are several large holes drilled into the base of El Cap in between The Nose and The Alcove. I remember them always being there as long as I've been climbing in the valley (around 1980).
I'm guessing they have to do with some type of geologic testing, but does anyone know why they were drilled and how long ago??

They've always been a puzzle to me.

Thanks for any info

just came across these on a stacked series of tiers at a couple fossil reefs out in the Caribe, much longer, deeper cores but of similar diameter, out of limestone hardgrounds. Definitely some type of time estimation sampling stuff by geo-chemistry folks. I was a bit pissed about how blatant the holes were, not 50 m off the road and beginning at ground level. Fairly girthy samples, I'd guess P-mag makes sense for that....but I've helped to collect P-mag samples in NPs and the samples were not drill cores... My limestone stuff might've been detrital zircon sampling, or cosmogenic burial age date samples...

Ah, to be an 'official' official, now that is a thing.

I say fill 'em with chunky JIF for #46.

Testing the rock for the feasibility of damming up the valley so Fresno could build more golf courses. Just kidding, who in their right mind would build a dam in such a beautiful place.

holes like that anywhere near the road are likely left over from the construction of the road. what is left of a blasting hole , you see those in quarrys a lot.

similar for sure, tradman, to the wide gauge roadbuilding bits of yore

a lot like the two finger pocket drillholes on Otto's route, Independence Monument

There are similar shot holes in the granite in LCC for the quarrying used to make the LDS temple in SLC. Does the LDS temple in Modesto have familiar looking granite on it?

So basically you're saying they're really, really small holes and we shouldn't be concerned. Right?
