Beautiful. You make me want to write more often and to be a better writer when I do. Thanks so much for transporting us to another time and place for a few minutes to catch a glimpse into humanity as you saw it. We are all better for it. What a great story.

I hate Illinios Nazis.
My ex is a tough girl from Cicero who dated a black kid in high school for a bit which basically meant getting death threats every day, not being able to walk around together in the hood, and not being able to tell your parents. She couldn't wait to blow that f*#king racist pop stand.
Jail stories? On which continent?

I've already commented previously, however, recent events make this story that much more poignant & refreshing. The face of hate is certainly one of the ugliest & unsettling things I can think of. There should be a 12 step Haters Anonymous program, where those burdened with fear, anger, and confusion could get free from the lifetime of indoctrination they have received.. Thanks for bumping this
