I got really spoiled up in Vangroovy and Seattle last
week driving with people who are not 24/7 homicidally inclined.

Maybe not in their home state but man, you really gotta stay out of the way of rigs with WA plates around here. I drove east over the divide to Pipestone this weekend and got passed by aggressive drivers going well over 90. Plus, with a new moon/crescent you have more wildlife on and around the highway zone. The speed limit is 80 and that STILL isn't fast enough for the hyper-energized or whatever you call all these Livers-of-a-Life-Not-Fast-Enough type folks.

Calm the F@#$ down people. I wish we had more troopers out there bringing more $$ to the state...

I've worked on the ambulance and Fire Dept. so I am a bit biased having responded to many vehicle accidents.

EDIT:

I agree with DMT except for Interstates and some main arteries in town. Our pothole 'sitch is pretty gnarly every spring and this year is no exception. It's pretty easy to avoid them by swerving. I mostly ride a bike and have had multiple close calls this spring from people swerving into me. One rear view mirror came within inches of my head. Of course, if people would calm down, stay off their social media fix for a couple minutes and actually drive in a controlled manner it wouldn't be as unsafe as people make it.

I made the mistake of telling my smog guy my old truck had an after market chip in it. He said "I didn't hear that" because he would have had to fail it.

Sure the chip may make it pollute less, but how is the DMV going to keep track of every chip (or other after market item) and determine if it is better or worse and if that's the actual one installed. Much easier to police it if they just say it's got to be stock or approved (at the manufacturer's expense).

If it's an illegal mod and they pass you they are risking their license and livelihood. I got lucky and the guy was cool because there's no way he could have known I had it if I didn't tell him. If he was a dick he could have failed me. If it's a visible mod he has to call it out or face possible consequences.

Ever flown into LA? Especially in the 90s? The air is disgusting and you don't realize you are breathing that nasty sh#t all day when you're on the ground. It's gotten much better thanks to regulations. California has some of the worst geography/population concentrations/wind patterns for air pollution in the world, so it needs the most stringent regulations. Unfortunately that means people in places like Eureka who don't need as much still have to do what's required in LA, because again how are the going to police that?

Is there some corruption and mismanagement involved? Sure it's done by people and government where no one seems directly responsible for their actions.

Try a different test station
This. Ask around or read some online reviews. Or just go to the most ghetto station you can find.

I also agree with Reilly about CA drivers, we need a driving SKILLS test and not just a driving safety test for a license in CA. But it's CA so that would be considered discriminatory to crappy drivers :)

I don't drive on metaphors, but I sure drive on some crap roads amongst some
crap drivers.

I think you overstate your case compared to what I deal with up here...
