El Diente is a climbing and bouldering area in Jalisco, Mexico. Located outside of Guadalajara, the birth place of Acopa climbing shoes, El Diente has seen visits by climbers like John Bachar and Lynn Hill. Guadalajara has an active climbing scene, with numerous quality sport and trad areas.

Because of its proximity to a large population (Guadalajara is the 2nd largest city in Mexico), the area surrounding El Diente has been overused and has considerable damage to the local flora and fauna. If you imagine Stoney Point in the 1980s you have an idea of the level of destruction.

Fortunatly, a Mexican non-profit, Fundacion Mexico Vertical, has begun an extended education/clean-up project over the next two months. The objective is to educate the local user groups and to try to mitigate the damage.

Climbers have risen to the occasion time and time again, cleaning up and restoring areas that have been damaged by over-use. Clearly climbing has some impact, but the majority of the damage, in most cases, is from other groups such as high school partiers, 4-wheelers, campers, etc. I am excited to see Mexican's (who are proud of their country) standing up and beginning to care for their environment so that everyone can enjoy it.

For road tripping climbers, Mexico has a lot of climbing to offer, from boulders to big walls to mountaineering. The people are friendly, the food is great and the beaches are beautiful. Consider a trip south of the border, and if you can help out, bring bolts, extra trad gear etc, and donate to preserve the rock for all of us.
