"Caltrans has started clearing avalanche debris from the east side of the Tioga Road in several locations below 9000 feet. Presumably, they will be making their way towards Tioga Pass during the next several weeks. Visitors approaching Tuolumne Meadows from Lee Vining should anticipate bare pavement up to around the Warren Fork and creeping higher as the snow removal efforts continue. Please stay clear of all machinery while on this stretch of road."

I'm surprised to see them already beginning the preliminary stages of clearing the road. Especially with the wet spring the Sierra has been having thus far.

63" of snow and dropping fast at the Pass right now: http://cdec.water.ca.gov/jspplot/jspPlotServlet.jsp?sensor_no=10107&end=04%2F05%2F2018+18%3A20&geom=huge&interval=14&cookies=cdec01. But we'll see what these next couple incoming systems bring.

Anyone know if the gate 5 miles west of Lee Vining is open to the park entrance at the pass?

I did read it was open last week but I’m not sure how much snow they got during Monday’s storm event and if that got plowed?

Info much appreciated, please I know the road is closed this is a question about ski road access pass the gate low down in the canyon.

"Caltrans continued there (sic) snow removal efforts on the east side of Tioga Pass this week and they reached Tioga Pass before this last storm. Visitors approaching from the east should anticipate dry pavement (except any new snow that falls) east of Tioga Pass. The park will be working on the road from west to east now."

Sounds like they're queuing up the big snow removal equipment at snowline before moving into the gut of Tuolumne.

Plows are just east of Tenaya Lake, working through three to four feet of snow.

I'll predict they open the road on May 18th.

When the pass is closed, it is enforced and presumably posted as wilderness.
I have a friend that "walked" his bike over the pass in winter 2015 and was intercepted and tooled near the gate above crane flat. $125!

Re spring cycling on the Tioga Rd, the Superintendent's Compendium of regulations for Yosemite, 36 CFR §4.30 (a), reads:

Spring bicycle use on the Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road may be permitted on days and during times in which no snow removal activities are underway, when the road is cleared of snow but not yet opened to vehicle traffic, and subject to any limits or restrictions set by the superintendent.

Another section specifies that the Tioga Road east of Crane Flat is closed in winter. Violating the closure would be the basis for a ticket and fine, not lack of a wilderness permit. Wilderness permits are only required for overnight camping.

Surely that doesn't apply to x-country skiing. I've skied up the Tioga Road from Crane Flat tons or times and never been cited. You must mean riding a bike up that section of road?

Tioga Road
April 27, 2018
Road and forestry crews are working all along Tioga Road. Plows reached Tioga Pass, although significant snow and rock/debris remain along the road. Olmsted Point avalanche zone is still active. While plows have reached Tioga Pass, a substantial amount of work remains prior to opening. There is no estimated opening date for the Tioga Road.

Updates, if any, about allowing bicycles on Tioga Road prior to opening, will appear here.

Riding a bike on a legally designated road is regulated by the Calif Vehicle Code. Cross county skiing is not.

However, the route can be closed to all activity, if doing those things creates a significant risk of interference with official vehicles, snow or otherwise.

Wilderness boundaries are not flexible, and do not change with conditions. However, the corridor of the non-wilderness is narrow, I thinnk measured in feet.

The park doesn't usually announce the opening until a few days before. 120 is open from the east side to the park gate, which is at 10,000 feet. The road is plowed in the park. As of May 3rd side roads had not been plowed.

My guess based on living and working in the park for 25 years is it will be open by the 25th. I would say it might possibly be open by this weekend. By the 11th. Lows at 10,000 feet are above freezing at night.

I don't recall any means, like a gate, to open portions of the road between Tioga Pass and Porcupine Flat, even if ready to go (South Fork?). Think about the logistics - tourists in rental cars, the need for bathrooms, trash, pull-outs and shoulders, ambulance and emergency services. On top of Zinke/Trump saying "give them nothing until we can privative everything and make a profit." I'm sure they're working on it as best they can.

SR-120/TIOGA PASS SET TO OPEN MONDAY, MAY 21

Yosemite National Park will open State Route 120/Tioga Pass for the season on Monday, May 21, 2018 at 9:00 am. There will be limited services on Tioga Road and all campgrounds along Tioga Road remain closed.

There is no anticipated opening date for the Tuolumne Meadows store and the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center. There is no gasoline available along Tioga Road. The closest gas station is located at Crane Flat.

Motorists should drive with caution and be aware of possible hazards in the roadway, including rocks, debris, and water. Tioga Road may be impacted by incoming storm activity, including snow and icy driving conditions, over the next week.

Tioga Road may temporarily close due to weather and unsafe driving conditions at any time. Tioga Road is a seasonal road through Yosemite National Park, typically open from late spring to early fall.

For updated 24-hour road and weather conditions for Yosemite National Park, please call 209-372-0200.

Cruised up on my bike from the Tuolumne Grove trailhead to Medlicott Dome before flipping around yesterday. Conditions were great aside from scattered rain and a bit of hail later in the afternoon.

It's awesome that the NPS allows cyclists only for a day each year - no way I'd ride Tioga Rd on a normal day with all the RVs out there.

Conditions looked great on a bunch of domes - can't wait to come back and climb next month!

It likely wasn't the amount of snow on the ground, but rather the weather conditions that kept them from opening it. Snow flurries can turn into feet of snow very quickly in the Sierra Nevada. Combine that with a location in California where too many people do not know how to drive in the snow and do not have snow tires on their vehicles, and things get hairball very quickly. The park errors on the side of caution. In one snow storm near Wawona, it snowed 12 inches in an hour, and in that hour there were 35 car accidents between Wawona and Oakhurst. 2 of them with serious injuries. I can't tell you how many people from back east or some other cold place who came to Yosemite and ended up in an accident because they thought the few inches of snow was no big deal. Warm roads and heavy wet snow make for treacherous conditions.

Driving up tioga last week to the closed gate i noticed that cal trans had built rock and dirt berms on the shoulder of the road...Looked like it was done to keep cars from going over the side...? cheaper than guard rails...? I imagine one car sliding off the icy road up there could close the pass for a day..So why tempt fate by leaving the road open during a storm..?
