"A Brief History of Time," was a formative read for me as a teen.

His matter is now just a bit more chaotic. RIP

hey there, say, WyoRockMan... just saw this...

he was able to live a long, time, with this condition...
that was amazing:

from wikipedia...
After being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, Hawking fell into a depression – though his doctors advised that he continue with his studies, he felt there was little point.[67] However, his disease progressed more slowly than doctors had predicted. Although Hawking had difficulty walking unsupported, and his speech was almost unintelligible, an initial diagnosis that he had only two years to live proved unfounded.

*learned a lot of his school years... was very interesting...

At the age of 22 Stephen Hawking was given only a few years to live after being diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease.

I remember him as being a very passionate unbeliever, perhaps a hater although I can't say that with certainty.

At any rate, I guess he will figure it out now.....

Never liked him, though.

We all have it coming. But it's a sad day for the physics community. I bet his chair ends up in a museum.

Farewell, sir.

He might have been a reincarnation of Gallileo. Because the Catholic Church persecuted him in that life, it may explain his distaste for organized religion in this one.

I always wondered why he never changed his voice.

I saw an interview with him once where that was asked. His reply was that it was simply his voice now and if he were to change it, there wouldn't be the human recognition associated with it.

Sharp wit and funny as well.

Hawkins was born exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo and died on Einstein's Birthday.

RIP Stephen Hawking. What a remarkable man. His life's arc is every bit as much a triumph of the human spirit as his magnificent mind and his contributions to physics. I have always been impressed by his joi de vivre and his humor as much as by his contributions to science. We are all poorer for his passing, but richer for his passing through our human firmament.

British physicist Stephen Hawking is to take his place among some of the greatest scientists in history when his ashes are interred inside Westminster Abbey, close to the graves of Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.

I kept seeing "Americas smartest man" and some such in the news obits. He had a great run, no doubt, but the question was raised and I believe valid: "If he was so smart, why did he make exactly zero progress on curing the disease that he knew he had for 56 years?"

It was amazing he did successfully deal with the disease, accomplishing so much despite his condition for 55 years, and living well into old age.

"Most people with ALS die of respiratory failure within three to five years of the onset of symptoms, though about 10 percent of sufferers live for 10 or more years, according to the NIH.
"There are a lot of cousins of ALS that can exist that are milder," Bhatt said. "Sometimes as a doctor, it's hard to differentiate which is which. We don't have a blood test or MRI test," he added.
Theoretical physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking, who has a motor neuron disease related to ALS, survived more than 50 years since his diagnosis at age 21 despite an initial life expectancy of just a couple of years.
