Just caught the new route bug at Pinnacles, courtesy of Brad Young, guidebook author extraordinaire-how much for the drill holder?

Just a quick update on the bombproof drill holders. This one has drilled holes for hundreds of bolts in granite. I think it has held up well. I got word the set screws no longer worked so I asked for it back. It looks like a few things happened

* the set screws had worn down on the bit end and were shorter than they used to be.

* The threads on the bit end of the set screws had got buggered up so the set screws were probably hard to screw in and out.

* The sockets of the set screws had sheared off from being twisted with the Allen key leaving a very shallow socket for the key.

One set screw had enough of the socket left to turn. I couldn't get it out but I screwed it in until it fell out inside the holder.

The other set screw socket was too gone to turn with the Allen key so I drilled it out with a 1/8" carbide drill bit, jammed the handle end of a little file into it and managed to screw it in until it dropped out.

Install some new set screws and it seems to be good to go.

The lesson is, replace the set screws every hundred bolts or so. McMaster Carr part number 94495A243
