Let’s give some just due to one of nature’s marvels. They come down to the sea in Patagonia in a latitude as close to the equator as central Italy and cover an entire continent. They are in retreat in most of their range but still dominate some of the special places alpinists play.
Lets see some pictures!

You want glaciers? Okay, here's a glacier for you.

The tent in this picture is parked on an icecap, rather than a glacier, but then, an ice cap is really a kind of glacier, isn't it? And behind the tent is the top of the Coronation Glacier, as it leaves the icecap and begins its 35 km journey to the Arctic Ocean. (Lined the entire way with 1,000 meter walls.)

And here's another. Some unnamed glacier draining into some other unnamed glacier which, in turn, drains into some other unnamed glacier in 20,000 sq km of unnamed glaciers. All of which are lined by immense granite walls.

If only we were younger...

I have only pedestrian fare, but always love traveling on glaciers to get to a climb

The Big Daddy of glaciers outside Antarctica - the Fedchenko, as seen from the tail gunner’s
seat of a Mil Mi-8 ‘Hip’.

Yeah, the Fed moves a lot of dirt. Prolly protects it from melting as much as others.

Don't need to go that far back in South Georgia. Shackleton's South Georgia traverse would have been very different now. Messner, Venables and Anker confirmed that.

The glacial retreat there has necessitated a urgent effort to eradicate rats from the whole island to to prevent them from spreading before the glacial barriers disappear.

Not gonna win the thread with this one, but: remnants of terminal moraine from long-gone glacier north of Strawberry Peak, near L.A.

There are many small glaciers guarding unnamed and unclimbed peaks in Aysen. You have to fight your way thru thick rainforest just to get to them.

There are so many out there, and yet so many less than there used to be during our lifetime.

always liked the feeling of being trapped in a very malevolent maze... hazards from above and below... and baking in the Sun one moment, plunged into arctic cold the next.

Someone mentioned the South Georgia glaciers, and how Shackleton's journey would be different nowadays- this is the glacier at the head of King Haakon Bay, from where they started the trek over to Stromness

The West Trapps Glacier approach to the Uberfall is treacherous this year. Reports have several bruised hips and derrieres already this season.

Nice photos folks.

Looking down the Gillam Glacier from under the north-side of Mt. Deborah in 1976. After we decided we were done nearly dying, Chris & I hiked down to the hill at center-left to get line-of-sight to Fairbanks, so we could radio Cliff Hudson to come pick us up. Unfortunately, we neglected to take a rope or harnesses, since we had not noticed any crevasses in our area.

Here's Chris approaching where the Gillam interesects two other valley glaciers. The moraine debris fields combined with huge crevasses, were "very-interesting" to solo across, on our way to the hill at left. The fresh bear tracks in the same area, added some more spice to our adventure.

Fritz on top of a spur peaklit of Deborah, with the west face of Deborah at top left, & the upper Yanert Glacier below.
