I watched the American Curling Coed Team play the South Koreans last night.

Had never before grasped the nuance and purpose of the event but now see it as a fusion of the finesse of pool with the deceiving simplicity of shuffleboard.

I was high at the time which may very well be responsible for this epiphany.

South Koreans won by the way.

I miss Eddie the Eagle. Eddie was actually a good downhill skier, and almost qualified for the Olympic team as a skier, but he could not keep up with the expense of training, the reason he went to jumping.

http://wfla.com/2018/02/09/1988-olympics-eddie-the-eagle-becomes-global-icon-despite-last-place-finish/

Perseverance and determination kept The Eagle flying. In the two years before the 1988 Olympics, he slept in his mother’s car, ate food from garbage cans, and received little help from his home country who had never qualified for ski jumping at the Olympic level. Edwards even spent a month in a mental hospital – not because he was a patient – but to spend a night in the cheapest room they offered, while training in Finland. He actually found out he qualified for the 1988 Olympics in Calgary one night in the asylum after representing Great Britain in the world championships in 1987.

I tune into The Olympic Network (NBC) and they're televising English Soccer (which, as it turns out, is played the same as regular soccer).

I turn on the TV News, and all I see there are still pics. Still pics, no video. In the Twenty-First Century no video.

What do I gotta do to see the Olympics? Go to the theatre on Sunday and watch a newsreel?

So far, the coverage I've seen has been excellent.

Very little human interest pablum. No marathon coverage of curling.

Instead, I got to see 17 year old Red Gerard deliver the goods. Slopestyle snowboard competition blows me away. What they can do now is mind-boggling.

Saw Chris Mazdzer finish second in the luge. Booyah!

US women's hockey beat Finland. Congrats ladies!

Even the figure skating and cross-country skiing is good. All things in moderation.

Hope the solid coverage continues.

I've been watching for over a half-hour, and I've seen exactly one snowboard run (the American, of course, as if she was the only competitor) and that's it.

This winter Olympics is a 100% blackout, and non-existent as far as I can tell. I don't subscribe to cable and NBC doesn't broadcast via antenna like all the other networks. Besides, the USA is probably one of the worst in Olympics broadcasting, having seen what is offered by Canada to her citizens, for instance.

Keep the updates coming.

Chaz.. the women's giant slalom was postponed to another day because of high winds. That was supposed to be on NBC's main channel. The winds also delayed the women's snowboard event which is on their secondary channel right now. I'm not sure why they didn't just put it on their main channel. But the weather has been causing problems, which might explain the extra filler.

As far as US Network TV goes, NBC network is using two channels. The NBC channel is showing all the most popular stuff like figure skating and alpine skiing while NBCSN(you need some sort of cable/satellite subscription to get this channel) is showing the less popular stuff(XC skiing, biathlon(!), etc.).

Of course, if an American wins a medal in any sport the highlight finds its way to NBC channel.

What was the most memorable thing about Shaun White's performance last night was that it seems hip with the current generation that you, at least outwardly, have to have this persona that you don't really care about what happens. It was clear from his post-event emotions that he really(really) did care about what happened. Nice to see his true emotions.

(Reuters) - A group of North Korean cheerleaders were briefly wowed by the apparent, sudden arrival of their leader, Kim Jong Un, at a Winter Olympics ice hockey game on Wednesday.

Some cheerleaders giggled then immediately averted their gaze as the impersonator, who later only identified himself as Howard, smiled and waved to crowds who came to watch a unified Korean team play Japan at the Pyeongchang Games.

"They are playing a good game, they scored one goal. As a president, it's all I can ask for," Howard told Reuters, shortly after plain-clothed officials from South Korea's National Counter-terrorism Centre moved him away from the cheerleaders, who he said had been doing a very good job.

I don't know if it's the announcing. Yes, Bodie Miller is more about the technical aspects than a cheerleader for the racers. Time trial events are difficult in that the winner might have been the 3rd skier down and then everything else is just a anticlimactic.

Ski racing is trying to experiment with a two-race downhill format much like they use in slalom and giant slalom where the fastest skiers in run one go in reverse order. You don't know the winner until the last skier has finished their second run.
John M

climber
Feb 14, 2018 - 08:13pm PT
I think it was that there was too much background information while the racer was actually on course. Instead of focusing on the race happening right then. Plus the racers were taking off right as the previous racer was finishing, so there was no build up. I want the background between racers, then concentrate on the race as it is happening. but with no time between racers and it being shown live with no time delay, the announcers can't do that.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but two races would help with the build up and the drama.

But wow.. they sure do fly.

i don't see how that pairs figure skating final [that happened tonight] doesn't end up being a candidate for one of the most poetic events that is going to come out of these olympics.

a 34 yr old, five time olympian [with "only" two bronze olympic medals - despite her five world championships] decides to keep on keepin on after her former partner of eleven years decides to retire.

and then she and her new french partner [who had to pay 30k euros to be released by the french figure skating mafia/association so he could skate with savchenko for germany... hahaha] manages to set a new world record in the free skate, and due to some bobbles with the two leading pairs, succeeds in jumping from fourth after the short program to gold...

figure skating has to be some of the pinnacle of human athletic potential... :)

and the commentary has to be one of the nadirs of olympic coverage... it's like could you insufferable drop out arts school snob commentators just shut the fUck up until the programs are finished and let us watch this beautiful combination of human emotion/art/culture and athletic potential, that these folks have trained a lifetime to attempt to pull off?

apparently not...

hahahaha.

oh well: haven't seen a figure skating final as filled with that much naturally generated drams in a long, long time.

congrats to aliona savchenko [and her partner]... that was a thing of human beauty.

A SNOWBOARDER WON THE WOMEN'S SUPER G !

Ester Ledecka from the Czech Republic raced 26th. She was not expected to medal. She is a champion in snowboarding. NBC had already declared another skier the gold medal winner (Austria's Anna Veith ended up getting silver ) and cut away from the race. They had to come back to show it after it happened. Thats one of the things thats been bothering me about the coverage. They only showed something like 12 of the men's downhill races. So this young woman won gold and she did it on American skier Mikaela Shiffrin’s skis who decided not to do the GS race because the races got pushed together because of weather.

Lindsey Vonn finished 5th.. She raced first and had a great run, but made one mistake right near the end.

Love it.

Ester Ledecka was absolutely clueless that she had won the gold. She wasn't even remotely in the running. For a few minutes she was totally unable to comprehend what they were telling her. The look on her face was priceless.

Those Euros who have been training specifically for this event for 4 years may beat her sensless if they catch her in a dark alley. ;)

@ Hocking: Well, arguably... it does take a wee bit of physical skill beyond the "art" to pull off 5 quadruple jumps while standing on one leg...(and they have made the scoring system a bit less subjective than past decades IMO) ...but we'll agree figure skating isn't a "sport" in the proper sense.

and don't get me started on Synchronized Swimming. ;)

cause that’s kind of the thing about the winter olympics: as an international spectacle it’s very contrived...

i mean really, how many of the sports have enough international amateur participation to consider them to even some degree actual international sports?

curling and hockey are basically canadian sports.

cross country is a norwegian sport.

the tobogonning sports are basically only german.

long track speed skating is dutch.

ski jumping and biathalon are basically norwegian and german.

and short track speed skating is really just a made up sport that doesn’t have a significant base anywhere... :)

which means, off the cuff i’ll argue there’s basically only figure skating, alpine skiing and snowboarding that are actual internationally [or at least northern nation] contested endeavours...

point being the winter olympics are just a handful of northern nations getting together to put on exhibitions of their national sports while taking on a few outliers from other nations... :)

still fun though!

and that 15s or so look of confusion from that snowboard racer come alpine gold winner trying to figure out, as she said in an interview after, whether she had missed a gate or if there had been a timing error? freaking high-larious! especially as i don’t think anyone without a stop watch would have seen that coming either, given the what appeared to be at least a couple significant speed sluffing errrors in her run...

i can’t recall ever seeing such a complete and total surprise win before: she said her coaches were aiming for a top 15 finish and she thought that was overly ambitious... hahahahaha.

BJ, I should dig out a pic of the FOUR of us on one pair of XC skis! We were testing for K2,
when they still were in the XC game. There was a fun 4 x something relay so we got them
to agree we only had to do one lap. It took a while to hit our ‘stride’ but we won, going away!

My son and I rode the Lake Placid bobsled a few years back. It's open to the public and cost $40 when we did it. I think it's $75 now.

You watch a safety film, saddle up between the driver and the brakeman(locals) and bob on down half a mile of the one mile track. You're in there pretty snug as you wrap your legs around the guy in front of you. You can move your head to the left or right to get a limited view of what's coming. Your shoulders take a lot of the banging from the short quick turns shaking you around. It was over in about 34 seconds.

They had some type of cage arrangement on the luge if you wanted to ride that but I didn't get a good look at it.

Then, if you're feelin frisky you can hit the ski jump.

There's two options.

zBrown

Ice climber

To get a straight answer I called David Currier, a former Olympic downhiller who lives in Boulder, Colo. He raced in the downhill and giant slalom for the U.S. during the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo. "We had top speeds over 93 miles per hour when I competed," he says. "They haven't gotten much faster since then." Speeds are tracked by a radar gun set up at the fastest section of the downhill run. According to Currier, there is one stretch on almost every course where racers reach 85 miles per hour or more.

It's hard to find just a shot of Mz. Vonn's skis. Her height is listed at 5' 10" - skis 185?

Randall and Diggins win gold in XC Team Sprint!!!

The best fukin win for the U.S. in the whole fuking lympdicks competition. First XC medal for the U.S. in 42 fuking years & the first medal ever for U.S. women in XC, & the first gold medal for the U.S. in XC -------ever!!

WOOHOO!

Randall and Diggins edged out Sweden and Norway to capture the historic gold in a blazing time of 15:56.47 — 26 seconds faster than their semi-final time. Diggins, who narrowly missed the podium several times this Olympics, dug deep in the final sprint to catch race leader Stina Nilsson of Sweden, and surged past her at the line to win by 0.19 seconds.
The gold medal is the first in U.S. history in cross country, and you’d need to go back to the Innsbruck Games in 1976 to find a U.S. medal of any kind in cross country skiing. The last winner was Bill Koch, who took home silver in the men’s 30 km sprint — but gold has constantly been out of the USA’s reach in the event, which is routinely dominated by Nordic countries.

Different sports have different attributes helped by different drugs.

For curling, as for such things as archery, it is not strength that makes the difference, but nerves and concentration. Something like a beta blocker, which diminishes the effects of adrenaline, would probably allow one to be more accurate and calm. It's use in an endurance sport would be disastrous.

What is remarkable, is that any countries can end up effectively competing with the US, Russia, China and India. As the largest countries, they have the greatest genetic resources to produce standout athletes. It's understandable that India doesn't, because their society is not geared toward physicality rising to the top. The other three definitely are.

For example, the US has these amazing national training centers. Promising athletes can go there, subsidized, and get top-notch coaching, psychology, nutrition, physical therapy, training, scientific measurement of performance.

I believe they've done evaluations on high altitude climbers.

Nothing remarkable at all.
In individual sports, one may expect the percentage of winners from various countries to basically track the countries based on some combination of population, average wealth, and interest in a particular sport.
That's pretty much how it plays out, except for a few outliers. For example, Norway stands out (maybe Trump was on to something about wanting more Norwegian immigrants, and they are a group of Supermen/women?)
There may also be some exceptions for sports where outcomes seem to be correlated to ethnicity, but that's a different subject and we're not going there!

But those are outliers, the important point is there's nothing surprising about the results as a whole.

Most of the other countries have only 1 or 2 good teams and would have a hard time getting out of Southern Alberta.
