You could always camp at Ghost Rocks, though it's no closer than Walmart...

Watch out for the Ghost Rock creeper if you do... he likes frilly things

I would never sleep at ghost rocks. Even with two large angry dogs and a loaded shotgun by my side. That place is the epicenter of meth, Jesus and bad luck.

To Bradbury, the final example of Sheriff's Department incompetence, stupidity or outright complicity was the case of Jim Nestor. A resident of Johnson Valley, northwest of Joshua Tree, Nestor had started an informal one-man campaign to rid the area of drug dealers, says Knadler. But Nestor had no connection to the Bradbury case until early 1985, when a psychic called to say she believed that Laura Bradbury was being held in the mountains near Johnson Valley. Nestor drove to the site and, as the psychic predicted, he found an old oxidized aluminum trailer with a yellow stripe along the side. Although no one was around at the time, says Nestor's sister, Grace Downer, he found wind-strewn disposable diapers and a child's pink sleeper.

Some of you might remember the case...

Thanks for the links, except that horrible story about the little girl. I remember having heard about that, ling after the fact, of course, but never read that story.

Did they EVER find out what happened to her?

I'm not asking for illegal camping, and yeah, I don't sleep well worrying that someone is going to have me hoping to hell I can get to the driver seat and out of there before having a problem I can't surmount. That's why I do sleep at WM almost exclusively while on the road. One year I went out to Red Rocks with someone and slep in his rig along the way. He said I was talking in my sleep....I remember only myself moaning in fear... "(person's name I was there with), peeeeeople....." The dream was that they were out there, and a 'comin," But I don't remember why or for what.
