It is with overwhelming sadness to post that our great friend Dave Johnson passed away this last week. Many of you in Sacramento and Truckee may know Dave who posted here on ST albeit infrequently. He was an active climber/skier for the 40 years I knew him having first met him on top of the East Wall at our local crag Lovers Leap. A long time mountain lover who I shared countless adventures throughout the Intermountain West, Canada and the Alps but primarily here in his beloved Sierra. I will cherish the memories I have of such a great friend for the rest of my days.

man i'd share my lunch with that guy any day.
dave you're off belay.

your chains of carbon can now assume a relaxed state, as you ready your self for the next go-around.

i know you can't hear me, but the leaf falling late from the barren oak tree salutes you well.

you too, charlie. you can have half of my sandwich.

and here, let's crack open this bottle of vino and raise a toast to uncut tracks awaiting suitors wearing skiis and grins.

some days we're a cardboard cutout; old glue holding us together.
not today. today i'm powder soul and my thoughts of the good people i know and knew are cutting tracks across my brow,

 The Norwegian

So long Dave, Berg Heil...

It is always sad to lose good friends and adventure partners - they certainly take a part of us with them when they go. My thoughts are with you and his family.
Rest in Peace, Dave

Charlie, your post remembering your friend is mighty touching, and a class act. Thanks for sharing his spirit of adventure with us.

keep travelling, charlie.

the wind'll dry the tears

tears are a venue for phase change:

the emotions are borne as sorrow for our friends parting,

and thru the tear they become celebration and tribute as we
carry out the rest of our strides with our buddy upon our back.

Thank you for posting about this Charlie, I've been wrestling with grief and haven't been able to post anything myself. I will miss Dave tremendously and will cherish the memories and the good times we all shared with him. The mountains will feel a bit more empty now.

Dave sounds like a wonderful man to have as a climbing & skiing friend.

My life is poorer, for having never met him.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Gunkie:

Dave Johnson was not the Norwegian. The Norwegian may be many things, but he is not Dave Johnson...

Yea sorry Gunkie just to further clarify The Norwegian wrote that beautiful poem, he knew Dave and sent us the tribute.

Dave was with us on the Haute Route, I posted a TR on that memorable tour:
