Hard to beat IMO the durability, vivid colors and sharply defined lines of good acrylic paint. This one is an original which hangs in my cabin, painted by old time neighbor up the next homestead and is a reflexion of the local landscape. He told me when he cleans them up after years of display he just takes them down to the creek to wash em up. Haven't tried that yet.
It's called "Lupine" after the blue plant that flowers in late June, with the Western Larch, Engleman Spruce and Lodgepole Pine in the background.
Show me some more acrylics please!

hey there say... ionlyski, wow, love it...
i have oils and acrylics... i will find some...
just a minute or two or more, ;)
i tried to pick some that had outdoor trees... for the greens
like you shared...
then, a few others, for variety...
most of my others are ALL OILS...
though, i have a few more acylics, as well...
they work good, when i want to send a fast gift, as, i have not
time for oils to dry...
:)
oh, MUST SAY:
i WATER DOWN my acrylics... so they look more like oil paintings,
and then, i SPRAY THEM with a bit of craft lacquer, or,
they are duller, when watered down...
and-- at least one or two, of these are done on a harder
chalk covered board, so they look different than canvas...
you can get quite a few variety of effects, with acrylics...
i love it!! i have not been able to get my self to want to
do 'from tube' only acrylic, though...
i like the 'oil effects' :))

Yeees, I love acrylics(new fav thread on ST)! I just started painting this past Dec.
Here’s my first few(in reverse order of completion)...
Edit: Neebee I love that forest path one!!! and portraits oh my... I’m scared to try ;)

That is one cocky camel! And the bluebird looks like a college professor. Very nice!
I myself, do not paint. I just have a hard time with the vague and overlapping colors with oils sometimes and guess my brain likes acrylics. Kind of like eye candy.

yes, i will tell the stories, later tonight...
i got to sleep for an hour and then go do spanish with my neighbor...
say, also-- BigB wow, i love that camel!
yes, the bird and bunny, and all those...
there, you see-- different TEXTURES can be done, too...
and, try painting on a board, covered with gesso, too,
as well... for other effects...
they are things to blend the acrylics, with too, however, i do not
know if they last permanent for years, though...
but-- i still do some that way...
i've used egg with them, too... but, i used liquid acrylics, and sometimes-- you get a big oops, and stuff wipes off, when you paint
over and you lose your work... after it dries enough,
you can risk to paint over it though... (this is doing layers) ...
here is one that i had egg white in...
sadly, photo is fuzzy...
(used egg white mixed in, for the background...
ooops, did not realize the photo was so small...
will put a bigger one, up later...
it is one of the few that I KEPT for my self, :))

Hi BigB,
All my landscapes are loosely adapted from photos I take. The top one is looking across Crowley Lake from 395. The lower one is from a hike on the east side north of Lee Vining, can't remember which trailhead exactly right now.
I do have a couple from Red Rocks, when I get home I'll post it for you.

One thing to remember, and not just for acrylics, is that there are some cheap, plastic-powder pigments that are, to say the least, "fugitive". I was using "thalo red" on a painting, and just a week later, I could see that it faded compared to what had been applied the day before. So, I went back, and repainted out all that cheap red with a more expensive paint.
The better pigments are metal oxides, sulfides, etc., and are permanent and can be expensive. My favorite is a cadmium medium yellow, which is the same stuff they used to paint school buses with. It costs about five times as much as the cheap stuff, but it's permanent. Two other beauties are cobalt blue and chromium green.
Just don't lick your brushes, van Gogh - - - linseed oil is good for you, but heavy metals, not so much.

Thank you, OffWhite, that is nice of you to say. I haven't painted much at all since I moved to southern California. Been healthy, so I've been climbing a lot. Much of my time/creative energy has gone into working on my new yard, converting grass to a desert landscape. A lot of time and work! But I promised Fritz a piece based on one of his photos so that is on my "to do" list.

That bear is one of the coolest things I've ever seen, at least lately. How creative! Did you paint that yourself? Is it for sale? Beautiful.

Arne, you should take a look at the "art thread with images" thread. Mtnmun's been sharing his gorgeous work with us there for years. There's also a lot of other great work by the many supertopo artists posted there too.

Hey all-After Phyp steered me to the art thread and I saw all the amazing works there, I'm wondering if this thread is just a distraction? What do you think? To be honest, when I looked at all Mntmun's bears hell I can't even tell an oil from an acrylic anyways, ha ha.

Hi Arne and thank you Phylp, It is hard to tell an acrylic from an oil. My new series uses acrylic backgrounds and the animals and foliage are brought out in oil. this can still have a life of its OWN, even if you HAVE discovered the
art thread...
we can STILL come here, to fill this up with acrylic... :)

Ok great. Wow and I thought acrylics had sharp lines and oils were blurry. Celestial Bear prints? Yes?

THAT is one of my best memories, of getting a painting done...
i loved it... that one is oil, and took a while to do...
also, for ionlyski (arne) will go and edit the pics, later, i hope tomorrow, and let you know the history, behind them...
did not forget, :)
thank you dickbob, and thebravecowboy, -- just knowing that the paintings are a treasure to someone, makes us artist feel good about what we do...
'capturing' the wonderful moments that we see... be them from photos, or,
from 'at the moment' of in or outside... :)
