Southern root-digging top-outs down in the hollows are a form of agile scummery.

It's where you top out by pulling on your last hold on rock and reaching up and over as far as possible to sink the fingers of one hand deep in the roots of the forest floor then cutting with the other hand to do the same with it. You then brutally drag yourself up and over the forest floor a handful at a time. After standing up the your entire upper body and pants should be green if executed correctly. Best done while free soloing for full effect.

I always figured that scumming was climbing at the Gunks during a big caterpillar year...

Who among us haven't scummed. I've dumpster dived, riddled trash cans to eat and been scared shirtless on slabs. Oh, and trolled the Lodge cafeteria.

And when it fails.....and the pro gets zipped......this is the origin of the expression......"the scum of the earth."

Beer out the nose on reading that one!

Awesome.

Scum = euphemism for Mildew Encrusted Shower Stall, which btw, is a route name.

This thread seems to have a few notions consolidating so far:

1. reprehensible person

2. highly prized movement of a general type

3. highly prized movement of a specific kind

4. some kind of funk growing in their man-bun or in their #vanlife

I'll give it a shot- similar to Skywalkers thought:

An in-ellegant yet effectual use of any body part to achieve a climbing move?

That frowning face, it used to be clean and dry,
nice ,safe-sh. A fire burned over the top,
changing, baking the soil.
Stoping the ability of the soil to absorb water. Now you can get a shoulder scum in the corner, it turns into a back step one palm down butt Scum against the off set wall that is on the left side

Full body Scum from underneath, where its cramped, to where J Gruenberg is,
and then a reach after the gear to stand-up, a pasted; arms wide move, One of those where you're kissing the rock all the way. On The 1st ascent team?

scum is a fun word.
it's the scruffy cousin of smear,
not so fussy or constrained by uppity footwear.

no particular application of scum is as showy as the crescendo of sweaty
peristalsis adapted from the order of cetacea known as "beached whale technique."

when the crowd of observers, often joined by freshly released spotters, gather to witness a highball thrutching
set to take place where the steep rolls off to summit slab, there arrives a time for special execution, one performed
to the accompaniment of unanimous gasp, as feet cut loose, lower limbs breach the skyline blue
and shiny ankles live to gleam on ... like the perfect peduncles they were born to be

Scum your way up Green Dragon

Slick at the start,9 foot run out after some ledgey 5.8, then good gear, solid holds out the horizontal roof.
The start of the business to a heel hook then a stand up into an over hanging v notch, with no gear at the top of the dihedral
to a bramble guarded ledge, covered in sapling north-east hard woods, in dripping wet dirt
Srub Oak, Rhododendron and some rouge Holly. with a 3 foot thick gauntlet of barbs and tangleg vines some poison ivy.
Dripping wet.
The only way through is to tunnel, trench, Scum between the rock and thorny birdsnest like edge.

Then theres Ero-scum,
