I only bailed once, Jun 5th 2015. From the fist pitch of After Six!

It was my third day in a row climbing in full sun and 90F heat. I got half way the first pitch of After Six, and couldn't catch my breath, or make my hand stay in the crack 'cos I was all wet from sweating, the tape was slipping off my hands. I asked my daughter (Martyna) to lower me. I was baked. Martyna took over the lead, finished the pitch and brought me up. (I fell while following, too). I drunk all my water (1.5L) and was still thirsty. Martyna looked at me and asked, are you sure you want to continue climbing? (I guess I didn't look very sharp). At first, I said I wanted to continue, but when I started climbing, I just couldn't convince my body to move up. I gave up. I don't remember being that exhausted, ever. I couldn't believe I was not able to finish the climb. Shamed!

But, I redeemed myself this year. I pulled a muscle (pectoralis) leading the third pitch of Too Tough To Die. I couldn't pull down much with my left hand, but I finished the pitch, and then led the fifth pitch too. After we finished that climb (6 pitches, 5.10), I proposed we climb some more. So we climbed Ewephoria (5 pithes, 5.9). (Although I didn't lead anything).

It took a month to heal the injury. For a few days after the incident the pain was so sharp, I was certain I hadn't ruptured something. Thankfully, it healed!

Pretty pathetic story, but that's all I got.

Next your I am going big. It will be plenty opportunities to bail!

I was fishing solo in a small skiff for snapper. Dropping 3hook HES rigs about 700-900 feet. It took a lot for me to try and stay over the lines running my leaky boat and bringing in fish.

Then I noticed the bilge pump had cut out and I was sitting low in the water. I hand bailed for an hour and wasn't making headway. I gave it hell and roared towards some islands. I had so much water in the boat the bow was pointed to the sky and felt relief when I got close to shore and shallow water.

Eventually made it back to the nearest house 7 miles away. My buddy helped me bail and it took us two hours to get her dry. Ughh close call.

2 bolts into a slab choss pile two weeks ago. Messy and wet. Went back last weekend to finish it when it was dry. Got it done. Will be a classic, no doubt.

No epic bail running from death warmed over, just bailed because I was done with the mess for the day. Now this week I have some knee swelling. Maybe I should have bailed again.

Moving story, tolerant, but you shoulda started hiking sooner. With pooch in arms.

My last bail was after hiking to the top. Rap-in route. Did not rap in.

In the shadows of the second huge rock slide we left a couple of hundred dollars of carabiners on New Dawn while down aiding through the night . On a positive note, we spruced up Lay Lady Ledge quite nicely- enjoy.

After five pitches of the Kor route on the Saber in RMNP, my partner Roland pulled a muscle in his chest that hurt like hell. The climb had been going great and it was still nice and sunny, but without a beat I agreed we should just start our rappels. Fortunately, one of the raps is just across the ledge at this point. The raps on this rock are horrible, however. Ancient tat and a rigid Friend made up one anchor. Plus, lower down you have to really pendulum a long way to make a ledge almost out of reach. One more rap off that ledge to rappeller's right and you are in a place you can downclimb to the gully. All in all a pretty simple bailout.

Back when I was a teenage climber, an old climber looked at me skeptically when I told him that I was also a climber. He asked me how many times I had bailed, and when I told him my bail rate was about 50% he said, "Okay. You're a real climber."

Ever make a pact with God, that if he got you off the climb alive then you would never climb again? I guess I'm going to hell, 'cause I violated that pact a lot.

I always say, "By Crom, deliver us from this hell and I shall make a sacrifice of blood to thee!"
