It's one hell of a read, and the imagery bolsters just how very real this issue is. We may have reached a critical mass with this issue, at least I hope so.

One of the quotes:

"I was afraid for my kids, I was afraid of the retaliation," she says. "I know what men can do when they're angry."

Yeah. That one rang for me. Because, you see, when I was four years old, and my father tried to molest me, I stood against him and told him I was going to "tell mom," and I ran. He became outraged and grabbed me. I managed to get out of his grip, but I was standing on the open staircase of the haymow in a barn. I had been there watching him work with a wood lathe - he could have taught me SO much, as he was a talented crafter, but instead, he taught me.... ANGER.

I fell from that second floor. Onto the concrete floor below. I remember waking up with him bent over me, white as a ghost, probably for fear I was dead.
(edit: I just realized that I only wrote the "it must have been that I ripped away and fell" version of that story. Wow. For my entire life I always wondered if if was that I ripped away and fell, or if he pushed me. Because I remember seeing his face - red, hateful - and then the next thing, waking up on the concrete. I din't know what happened, but I do know I was struggling to get away.)

People have called me a "victim," often in a derogatory way, when I am speaking out against abuse. The inference is that I am supposed to "get over it;" or for those pretending empathy, to "seek healing."

I am not a victim.
I am a warrior.

And so are the rising women, and men, who will no longer stay silent. We know our enemy well, and we are prepared for battle.

I know a woman who's faced an awful life to inocently be born into. She fought the destruction and beat it. Forgive the over simplification. Brave woman before our culture was ready for "Me too".

Thank you for your post. I'm sorry that happened to you but glad you survived the fall and that you continue to speak out against abuse.

Maybe John & Yoko & Plastic Ono Band are no longer right?

2017 - 1972 = a long time

Woman is the nigger of the world
Yes she is, think about it
Woman is the nigger of the world
Think about it, do something about it
We make her paint her face and dance
If she won't be aslave, we say that she don't love us
If she's real, we say she's trying to be a man
While putting her down we pretend that she is above us
Woman is the nigger of the world, yes she is
If you don't believe me take a look to the one you're with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Ah yeah, better scream about it
We make her bear and raise our children
And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen
We tell her home is the only place she should be
Then we complain that she's too unworldly to be our friend
Woman is the nigger of the world, yes she is
If you don't believe me take a look to the one you're with
Oh woman is the slave to the slaves
Yeah, alright
We insult her everyday on TV
And wonder why she has no guts or confidence
When she's young we kill her will to be free
While telling her not to be so smart we put her down for being so dumb
Woman is the nigger of the world, yes she is
If you don't believe me take a look to the one you're with
Woman is the slave to the slaves
Yes she is, if you believe me, you better scream about it
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance
We make her paint her face and dance

no dude, her quotation had ended. not from the article.

the magazine cover put a smile on my face too, Terry. so important for us all to talk about this sh#t.

leave it to an overgolfing fat bore of a president to ignore and try to stifle engaging conversation to be had in such vital open dialogue about sexual misbehavior and poisonous men.

as if women weren't wonderful enough to be with, on their own terms. and that explains a lot about the transgressors, their inability to find partners interested, caring, willing and giving enough to satisfy and mitigate testosterone-tainted males. this is only just a first step, but this issue of dude-ness really sits at the root of most of our other pressing issues as a "civilized" sentient species.

Hell yeah you are a survivor Terry! Someone else pointed your life path toward END and you just took the f*#k over reset the control to KICKASS. TFPU!

Happie......well said and thank you for being brave enough to speak out. Your experience is horrifying to read and is completely believable.

I've been married twice. Each of my wives has been raped, both as children. One by a family member. I've been close enough to several other women to know they had been raped. Usually by a family member.

I expect in my professional career I've worked with many men who were child/women molesters. They hid it well. All except one who was well known to the women where I worked (not known to the men, or was he? No one spoke up). He deservedly died young.

But this was the 70's and early 80's when male sexual and workplace dominance was accepted as inevitable. It was almost a joke that a woman could sleep her way up the management chain. Especially in the nascent Silicon Valley where many secretaries became wealthy when their older husband execs died. They clearly understood the quid pro quo.

In Utah among the Mormons male dominance is a man's right and a woman's obligation. When I was 12 (in Utah) a friend bragged he had raped his younger cousin. It didn't even occur to me to tell an adult.

This unacceptable male behavior is not inevitable nor universal, it has become a social norm. In my late teens, drunk after a street party (in Salt Lake) I nearly raped a young woman I had picked up. But she cried out before it was too late, I heard her and stopped immediately, terribly embarrassed. I shall never forget that and I thank both my parents for instilling in me a respect for women of all ages.

It's not so hard to accept women as equals. There never has been an excuse not to. It's a good thing for society that this terrible sexual power differential has been exposed. Now let's end it.

Well, I guess I could take that as an indication that, at least with a superfluous glance, I'm able to write at a level that could be assumed Times-level journo....but it would have been nicer if you had read the article and perhaps made a comment related to that.

Thank you to those who have wished me well. As you all likely know - my story is really just one in a million. We need to tell those stories, and disengage ourselves from the shame we have been told was ours to carry.

Probably should have been Trump. The award isn't a popularity contest, but rather a recognition of who stirs the bunch bowl with the biggest straw (no analogy to hand size). I applaud the winning choice. The obvious alternative: Sad.

The cover only bothers the Orange Sh;t Gibbon because it deflects attention from him for 15 minutes.
