Evacuation orders lifted in Santa Barbara County as crews tame massive Thomas fire

There was “no significant increase in fire activity” in Santa Barbara County, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Bill Murphy.

“Things are looking very good,” he said.

Looking at the map, it seemed to have stopped just short of the south side of Sespe Creek, but doesn't seem to be in danger of crossing it and continuing much.

On a related note, global weirding or not, California has always burned, but now we have over 39 MILLION people, so we also have a greater number of morons and potential accidents that can lead to these fires. One of the recent monsters, for example, was caused by a homeless dude's cooking fire in one of the canyons. Here's another example: A few years ago in my previous home of Tehachapi, a guy was pipe cutting in tall dry grass, sparks flying everywhere. No worries, though. He had a little bucket of water handy in case anything went wrong. The ensuing wildfire burned thousands and thousands of acres, torching some beloved mountain scenery and some classic cabins that had been in families for generations. In the same mountains: A dude decided that a fancy, low-altitude fly-by would impress his friend living down below. Barnstorming! Yeah! Crash. Death. Thousands and thousands of acres burned. In a state that has always had a long dry season every year, forty million fire starters are going to keep things interesting.
