This fire must be a beast because I'm a ways south in Santa Monica and it's like the inside of a chimney down here. Even inside my office reeks of fire.

I evacuated my spouse's house near Lake Casitas in west Ojai at 7 am and he followed at 10:30. I would like to thank those who posted a few months ago re the Santa Rosa and Napa fires. Those testimonies were fresh in my mind. I quickly realized the need to leave before exit routes to the Ojai valley jammed with traffic. Sure enough five hours later only two roads out are open (down from four). We packed the camping gear-- in case the house goes, my spouse will be camplng on his land during rebuilding.
I watched the orange glow over the ridge west of town last night as it blew south toward Ventura.
Feeling for those needing horse trailers--thinking some of the many horses in the valley may not make it out. It's a dog, llama, etc town and the humane society volunteers are asking for food donations (for the staff) and alfalfa, green hay etc. #Thomasfire on Twitter

Yes, Lizzie. Looking for word about Mike and Wendy. Hope they are untouched by this. Lots and lots of Patagonia / Lost Arrow people live right there. Can't believe how close the evac boundary is to 'gonia - Art City is in the evac area. Lots of prayers for all of them. My buddy Russell Erickson is right up the street from this mess. Fire has burned down to 101 at Mussel Shoals between Ventura and Carpinteria.
We have friends in Carpinteria.

A very nasty business.

At our Firesafe Council meeting last night our CalFire liaison officer told us that the local CalFire inmate camp has sent 6 crews, leaving only 1 behind.
Most of the CalFire stations up here in the Bay Area are down to 1 engine each. The rest have gone south. Fortunately the weather up here is very cool with very little wind and we've had about 2" of rain so we feel pretty safe.

Up here in the mountains near Castle Rock the Firesafe Council has done at a lot of defensible space clearance over the past 7 years and still work on it. We provide free chipping for privately cleared wood in the spring and fall. CalFire wants no tall brush or small trees below 10 feet above ground within 100 feet of the house.

About 200 families up here had to evacuate for the Bear Fire. If it had come around the corner of the deep canyon leading up to my house it would have been extremely dicey. We already keep our passports, marriage license, insurance policies, etc in a bank safe deposit box. Pretty much fire proof and we didn't have to run around in circles to find them. Grabbed some photos from the walls, two laptops and two cell phones, extra clothes, toilet kits used for camping, a couple of photo albums and we were GONE. Fuggedaboud the TV, Stereo, the silver service and your books. Hopefully you can find the dog and cat. Although up north many were lost several badly burned cats and dogs were discovered a few days later still alive.

The one thing we have all learned from the Winery Fires up north is..........get out EARLY.

One thing CalFire has learned is that "modern" communications systems (land line, cell phone, WiFi) are prone to failure! If only a couple of towers/phone lines etc go out the entire grid gets "holes" in it leaving no way of sending "reverse 911" calls to many houses. This clearly happened in the Winery fires. You can't trust your life on reverse 911!!!

A very similar thing happened on Long Island after Hurricane Sandy (I was there). Cell service was out for over a week precisely because the phone Co had skimped on backup generators for the cell towers. NY state had requested a generator on every tower. Telco put generators on roughly every 4th or 5th. The lack of sufficient backup broke enough routes in the network mesh to bring the entire system down. Afterwards NYState regulators forced the telco to add generators.

CalFire has just announced they will be looking at old fashioned generator driven air raid sirens (are you old enough to remember cold war air raid drills? As if hiding under your bed will save you!!!) on tall towers. They can be heard for over a mile. If one goes down there's no effect on the others (unlike a network). They are completely isolated from the "regular" communications networks. And you don't need power at your house to hear them!

The fire is named after this lovely Catholic Campus. Thus far, they have been spared any real damage, although the fire reportedly burned right up to the property perimeter.

I live in Malibu. The weather experts say that they have never seen such low humidity readings right next to the coast. I went to the beach around 2 p.m. today (Thursday). Felt like I was in the desert. As of today, they were able to save Ojai,

All of the reporting so far has been about saving the areas with homes, but no mention of actually getting a hold on the perimeter. Some sad scenes. The fire trucks got to one hillside cul-de-sac, and because of the power outage, the electric pumps that service the hydrants were not working. They had to use water from their trucks, and watched as five houses burned in front of them.

The Thomas fire expanded a lot last night.

Yes neebee.. the fire is heading mostly west and north. The winds are out of the east during Santa Ana wind events. The fire started just north of Santa Paula, ( where the fire flame symbol is in the second photo ) and went directly west and slightly south ( left in the first photo ) towards Ventura in one night. Then started spreading out north and east . Because the fire went north and then overnight was driven again by winds from the east, it jumped highway 150 and now Carpinteria is in danger. If the winds keep going, then Santa Barbara will be next. More winds predicted for today, though not as strong as they have been. Gusts to 25 mph. The first night the gust were hitting close to 60 mph. Thats why on the first night the fire traveled 10 miles in a matter of hours.

ARSONIST CAUGHT!!!!

What kind of a loonie starts fires like this? This guy caught in the act by people who had earlier fled a fire.

"A man suspected of setting fires near the Anaheim Hills Festival shopping center Friday was detained after a brave Ventura resident escaping one of Southern California's wildfires sprung into action to stop him. The man believed to be an arsonist was wearing all black and seen starting multiple vegetation fires near the shopping center before Josh Vietti stopped him, according to an Anaheim Fire & Rescue Department official. "I heard rustling in the bushes so I tied my dog on the fire hydrant and just took off running toward the bushes," Vietti said. Vietti and a second good Samaritan, Scott Nelson, followed the suspected arsonist. Upon confrontation, he claimed he was trying to start a campfire."

Santa Barbara 1964 Coyote fire.
https://www.independent.com/news/2009/sep/30/coyote-fire-september-22-october-1-1964/

My family camped at Carpinteria Beach State Park from 1959-1961 and I remember the first time we went there we traveled over the San Marcos Pass route from the San Joaquin Valley. It was steep and Lake Cachuma was pretty full that summer. There was a lot to do on the beach at Carpinteria--fishing from the pier, collecting shells at The Spot on the SE end of the beach, body surfing, and playing in the sand. There was a Santa Claus village nearby and the SB mission to tour. Don't forget cleaning tar off of the bottoms of the feet before getting into our sleeping bags!

I live just up the coast from SB about an hours drive and have been under the orange and brown sky of smoke since Thursday. This morning is the worst so far with about 1/4 inch of ash fall and the smoke dead on the ground.

Dawn and I have been watching the local KEYT news feed all day and since we once lived in SB and now just work there - we are very familiar with the areas at risk and the threats to many friends we still have in town.

This thing is a full blown monster and Steve around the corner who works for Phos-Chek tells me the chatter is it will burn until Christmas. Already the 5th largest fire in the State's history at over 200,000 acres with unofficial acreage at 225,000.

P.S. - best thing to donate to Firefighters - Visine - no kidding! Neighbors son works for CalFire and passed this tip on to me.

Yesterday got a call from friends. They were evacuating from Montecito and needed help. The drive up there was eerie, like driving into the apocalypse.

In spots the fire has burned both sides of the 101. They did a remarkable job saving La Conchita. Those slopes above are completely burned, though and the rainy season is ready to start. Not sure I'd want to be living there right now.

In Montecito the sky was yellow brown, ash coating everything. We loaded cars with what we could. They got the mandatory evacuation notice while we were there.

On the drive back to LA that evening we could see a solid line of fire burning from Summerland to a little south of Carpenteria. Close, no more than a 1/2 mile from the freeway. I didn't get a good look since I was driving, but it sure seemed like a group of homes in Carpenteria were about to get over run.

A little bit of hell has arrived in paradise.

The Thomas Fire has burnrd 230,000 acres so far. At present, CalFire is slugging it out on five fronts; Romero Canyon near Monticito, Lake Casitas, Dry Lakes Ridge creeping down Cherry Creek, Lion Canyon and Bear Heaven/Sespe Condor Sanctuary near Fillmore. It seems that they have things in-hand, but they are saying only 20% containment.

The air quality in Ventura today is terrible. Very smoky. Seems worse today than yesterday. Sometimes the wind helps, but most of the time it doesn’t.

I’ve heard that the fire burned around Wheeler Gorge proper but that the crag/creek were spared. The Sespe Gorge, Potrero John Slab, The Fortress, the Snake Pits and Pine Mtn are all ok for now.

Dean, the way things are going it will be in Slotown by next week. We can sure use a return of even just a moist on shore flow. On a side note, how are you liking SLO? My aunt and uncle started the Apple Farm Inn and restaurant years ago when I was a little kid. I remember sleeping under the booths as my dad and mom helped demo and construction. My aunt and uncle sold it several years ago but I still stop in for apple dumplings whenever I am in the area.

I can't tell where Dean got his photos. Does not look like SB. There is no fire visible on the ridge behind town and up to Calle Real. People are saying Winfrey's house in Montecito is burning, which if it were true, would have me worried. Don't think it is true. If you look at the fire map you see a finger pointed west. Last night was disappointing though. Petie is amusing herself at REI. All the firefighters buying stuff there remain pretty hopeful even though Wed was disappointing. I think three sky cranes are flying over our place on the way to Montecito. The landscaping in Montecito has trees packed into little cells with poor accessibility. Insane. CalFire says they are backfiring above Montecito in hopes of forcing the fire onto the 10 year old footprints from theTea and Jesusito . Right now they are working in 60 year old fuel. Ten mInuits ago the air cranes stopped flying over this area. Possibly the backfiring has been completed.

During the Jesusito fire I was wandering in 60 year old slash about six feet deep - until I noticed it was full of embers. Trying to see if I could keep the fire outside of our development. Pretty stupid. Ten minutes after I got out, it literally blew up.

I have some eight hoses in place ready to cool down the four sides of our place. As long as the hoses don't melt and we don't run out of water pressure, the place should be sort of defendable. Still have to close off the soffits under the roof.

JStan, no, Oprah is not burning. Her compound lies on the Southside of East Valley and is not in the fires path. By the way, when someone asks about Oprahs house, ask them which one?

She owns 4 around her main mansion so far.

As a number of people have inquired about how the fire has affected my wife and I and our property in Ventura I thought I would post up. First off, our property is fine--the fire burned primarily in the hills above Ventura and our houses are located closer to the beach out of the hills.
However, we were in the Oakview/Ojai area when the fire started and it was quite the experience. We were staying with Jamie's parents at their home in hilltop neighborhood called Saddle Mountain. This is just on the other side of the mountains from where the fire started in Santa Paula. Monday evening my wife mentioned that a fire had started in Santa Paula. I didn't really pay much attention to her comment as fires are quite common here in CA. I also remember watching the local news that evening and they had remarked on how windy it was going to be over the next several days. Hadn't quite put two and two together at that point. Later that evening we were sitting around in the family room watching some TV when the power went out. It flickered back on then went out permanently. This was my first inkling that something was amiss as I wondered if the fire was connected to the power outage. With the power out everyone but me went to bed totally oblivious to the carnage that had now been raging for several hours. I wandered out back to check the moon and stars out and noticed what seemed to be a huge fog bank beginning to obscure the moon in the direction of Santa Paula. I was just beginning to grasp what was going on but was still unclear of the magnitude of destruction. I went back in the house to tell Jamie what I saw but she was asleep. I went outside again and walked around to the front of the house where I was shocked to see the entire distant horizon over the city Ventura was a pulsating orange glow.
My God I thought this is insane. With no TV, internet and my shitty ATT cell service I had no way of knowing exactly what was going on. Then I remembered the good old car radio. I tuned into 1070 and got the full extent of the carnage. I just sat there for a few hours watching the blazing fire in the distance until the pulsating orange glow appeared ominously behind the hills just to the S.E. of Saddle Mountain where I had first noticed the smoke plume. This closeness of the pulsating orange glow coupled with the news reports of how fast the fire was traveling motivated me to wake the household. We all debated what to do and decided to hunker down for the rest of the evening (the night air was quite calm--very little wind). In the morning (Tues.)we huddled around the radio listening to the dire reports coming in from all around LA & Ventura as smoke billowed over the hills to the S. and E. We knew it was just a matter of time before the fire crested the hills to the S.E. and began burning down the hill towards Creek Rd--the last potential fire break before the houses on Saddle Mountain. We started packing and making plans to evacuate as did the entire neighborhood. The order to evacuate came in the early afternoon as the flames crested the hill and started down towards Creek Rd. We decided to wait until the last possible moment as the winds were calm and the fire was burning relatively slowly (downhill). If it crossed Creek Rd we would flee. Fortunately, it pretty much stopped there so we ended up spending another night (keeping a watchful eye on things). We awoke to thick smoke and everything covered in ash. Jamie and I left for home that morning heading down the 33 through the charred hills and smoke choked Ventura. [photoid=518350]

Good to hear yer good Mark! Stay safe. We had a scare down south in Fallbrook, not near the magnitude of the Thomas blaze, but thought we might loose our place, but all turned out good for us...not so good for many others.

Here we go Santa Barbara. Get out now alerts just issued for basically the whole Montecito areas west thru The Riviera out to San Marcos Pass.

My buddies house in that area is clocking winds at 60 mph...this monster is going to get ugly today.

This afternoon I drove south on 101 from SB to Ventura and thence on 126 to Santa Clarita. This is one heck of a fire. I saw remnant sources of new smoke one ridge back behind Montecito, Summerland and at Santa Claus lane. All of them were back behind the first landward ridge lines. No visible flames. The few places where the fire jumped 101 were apparently prevented from burning beachside homes. At 60 mph I could reach only a tentative perception. Structure protection appeared to have been hugely effective. In SB, great effort is being devoted to making Gibralter Road a primary containment line.

This fire was very persistent. At dusk on Friday I thought it was all over. Then Saturday morning we awoke to see a huge white cloud somewhere behind Monticeto that boiled up maybe 10,000 feet above Montecito, turned black, and began moving visibly west. I was doing structure protection for PT's place but soon decided if it came into our neighborhood it would roll over us as if we were not even there. Thanks to great luck( lower winds) and even greater effort it was kept inland of the houses in town. Monday 18 there was little wind and Wednesday became the next test for ability to resist motion due to the wind. Conditions seemed very hopeful but the helicopters worked like beavers all day and will do the same on Tuesday. Hopefully Monday's onshore breezes will be there also on Tuesday.

This has been a really hard one to call. But it seems there is reason now to be hopeful.
Edit:

After turning left at Ventura you can see well into some of the canyons running north.

Ash extending as far as you can see

I have kayaked Sespe several times from Lyons Camp to Filmore, it's an awesome area and am sad to see it burn but it will recover. Bear Haven has always intrigued me but thick brush has always been a deterrent, maybe this will be the year to make an attempt to check it out?

May have to update the title of this one -> 271,000

Thomas fire enters its third week

The scope of the Thomas fire continues to inspire awe and generate horror. The wildfire has scorched 271,000 acres across Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, destroyed more than 1,000 structures and damaged 250 more. An additional 18,000 structures remain threatened and thousands of residents still can’t go home. Some 8,450 firefighters are on the lines, the largest mobilization of fire crews to fight any wildfire in California history. The Thomas is now the state’s third-largest fire on record but is likely to become the second within the next day or two. “Usually Santa Ana winds last two days,” said Ventura County firefighter Antonio Negrete. “We’ve been firefighters for decades and have never seen anything like this.” Los Angeles Times

some bedtime reading regarding the drainage pictured (#1, rt edge #3) above: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Francis_Dam ... spoiler alert! ... doesn't end well

edit:
as the floodwater entered the Santa Clara riverbed it overflowed the river’s banks, flooding parts of present-day Valencia and Newhall.

The flood heavily damaged the towns of Fillmore, Bardsdale, and Santa Paula, before emptying both victims and debris into the Pacific Ocean 54 miles (87 km) downstream south of Ventura at what is now the West Montalvo Oil Field around 5:30 a.m., at which point the wave was almost two miles (3 km) wide

On a related note, global weirding or not, California has always burned, but now we have over 39 MILLION people, so we also have a greater number of morons and potential accidents that can lead to these fires. One of the recent monsters, for example, was caused by a homeless dude's cooking fire in one of the canyons. Here's another example: A few years ago in my previous home of Tehachapi, a guy was pipe cutting in tall dry grass, sparks flying everywhere. No worries, though. He had a little bucket of water handy in case anything went wrong. The ensuing wildfire burned thousands and thousands of acres, torching some beloved mountain scenery and some classic cabins that had been in families for generations. In the same mountains: A dude decided that a fancy, low-altitude fly-by would impress his friend living down below. Barnstorming! Yeah! Crash. Death. Thousands and thousands of acres burned. In a state that has always had a long dry season every year, forty million fire starters are going to keep things interesting.
