I evacuated my spouse's house near Lake Casitas in west Ojai at 7 am and he followed at 10:30. I would like to thank those who posted a few months ago re the Santa Rosa and Napa fires. Those testimonies were fresh in my mind. I quickly realized the need to leave before exit routes to the Ojai valley jammed with traffic. Sure enough five hours later only two roads out are open (down from four). We packed the camping gear-- in case the house goes, my spouse will be camplng on his land during rebuilding.
I watched the orange glow over the ridge west of town last night as it blew south toward Ventura.
Feeling for those needing horse trailers--thinking some of the many horses in the valley may not make it out. It's a dog, llama, etc town and the humane society volunteers are asking for food donations (for the staff) and alfalfa, green hay etc. #Thomasfire on Twitter

Yes, Lizzie. Looking for word about Mike and Wendy. Hope they are untouched by this. Lots and lots of Patagonia / Lost Arrow people live right there. Can't believe how close the evac boundary is to 'gonia - Art City is in the evac area. Lots of prayers for all of them. My buddy Russell Erickson is right up the street from this mess. Love Ventura - hate to see this happen.

Conditions: The fire continues to burn actively with extreme rates of spread and long range spotting when pushed by winds. Fire has burned down to 101 at Mussel Shoals between Ventura and Carpinteria.
We have friends in Carpinteria.
A very nasty business.
At our Firesafe Council meeting last night our CalFire liaison officer told us that the local CalFire inmate camp has sent 6 crews, leaving only 1 behind.
Most of the CalFire stations up here in the Bay Area are down to 1 engine each. The rest have gone south. Fortunately the weather up here is very cool with very little wind and we've had about 2" of rain so we feel pretty safe.
Up here in the mountains near Castle Rock the Firesafe Council has done at a lot of defensible space clearance over the past 7 years and still work on it. We provide free chipping for privately cleared wood in the spring and fall. CalFire wants no tall brush or small trees below 10 feet above ground within 100 feet of the house.
About 200 families up here had to evacuate for the Bear Fire. If it had come around the corner of the deep canyon leading up to my house it would have been extremely dicey. We already keep our passports, marriage license, insurance policies, etc in a bank safe deposit box. Pretty much fire proof and we didn't have to run around in circles to find them. Grabbed some photos from the walls, two laptops and two cell phones, extra clothes, toilet kits used for camping, a couple of photo albums and we were GONE. Fuggedaboud the TV, Stereo, the silver service and your books. Hopefully you can find the dog and cat. Although up north many were lost several badly burned cats and dogs were discovered a few days later still alive.
The one thing we have all learned from the Winery Fires up north is..........get out EARLY.
One thing CalFire has learned is that "modern" communications systems (land line, cell phone, WiFi) are prone to failure! If only a couple of towers/phone lines etc go out the entire grid gets "holes" in it leaving no way of sending "reverse 911" calls to many houses. This clearly happened in the Winery fires. You can't trust your life on reverse 911!!!
A very similar thing happened on Long Island after Hurricane Sandy (I was there). Cell service was out for over a week precisely because the phone Co had skimped on backup generators for the cell towers. NY state had requested a generator on every tower. Telco put generators on roughly every 4th or 5th. The lack of sufficient backup broke enough routes in the network mesh to bring the entire system down. Afterwards NYState regulators forced the telco to add generators.
CalFire has just announced they will be looking at old fashioned generator driven air raid sirens (are you old enough to remember cold war air raid drills? As if hiding under your bed will save you!!!) on tall towers. They can be heard for over a mile. If one goes down there's no effect on the others (unlike a network). They are completely isolated from the "regular" communications networks. And you don't need power at your house to hear them!
