Does anyone have a good recommendation for a solid climb pant? I know its not the San Juan burritos I'm so fond of, however, it never fails that within 3 or 4 months of average wear and tear, the seat of my pants rip or wear through. Is there a maker who puts focus on wear points (ie knees and seat) yet the pants stretch and moves well enough to make high stepping a breeze? I like Kuhl's hybrid pant but I have yet to see them make a pant that is light yet durable in the knees and seat.

Aside from the original painter's pants as still my favorite climbing pants of all time (had the patch them all the time), I really like some Black Diamond climbing pants I bought a few years ago and are still going strong.

Being tall I have issues with high stepping, wear is universal but I buy heavy weight white karate pants then go to a tailor shop (dry cleaner?) and have elastic sewn into the cuffs. Sounds involved and a bit weird but pretty cheap, great movement, and they last. No pockets though...

For me, the only pant that holds up, even when purchased second hand are Dickies or Carharts.

Kuhls have been pretty good for me. Pricey, but the butt hasn't blown out from farts, or assdragging so far.
Could be I just have good assdragging skillz?

Ever seen Bridwell in lycra? The time I did was in Hidden Valley CG, he had a posse of Palm Springs high school girls up for a day of climbing. It was, shall we say, quite a sight.

Prana Stretch Zion for everyday use. A friend with Arc'teryx Psiphon SL pants swears by them. Looks to be super durable.

Go to www.railriders.com and take a look at their "Extreme Adventure Pants". I have found them to be virtually indestructible and I highly recommend them.

Some people hate on Prana but I got a pair on sale almost two years ago and they've survived a lot of bush whacking and squeeze chimneying with bad form.

The beef I have with Kuhl is that they don't have anything in the middle spectrum that climbs well. I tried a pair of Radikl's (a hybrid stretch) and they tore in the seat after moderate use. Their heavyweight just doesn't allow for free movement but are tough as nails (a Munge favorite....I forget which model it is). Cotton hydrids suck.....you snag it on pussywillow and they rip easily. I think I'll check out BD and Arc'teryx line of pants instead.

These seem to have excellent reviews. Pricey but the fabric takes huge abuse and stretches as a softshell. Knees and seat are beefed up.

Maybe they'll get that one.
White painters are still the gold standard against which all other climbing pants are compared.
Though I did like the old RR Billy Goat pants.

I also like Mountain Khakis. Tough as nails with a gusseted crotch for ease of movement.
Of course, as a now ex-climber, they will probably outlast me.

Bro you're thinking about this all wrong. Reinforce with gorilla tape. I've totally blown out the ass of a few prana pants (I hate prana except for one particular light weight pant). Once blown you take gorilla tape and tape it back together on both sides. Next put em in the dryer on high. The glue will melt into the fabric and you now have a bomber ass! They won't come apart in the washer either...seriously...You've seen em on me...or maybe you thought i'd shat myself...

I was thinking more like Mucci had tagged you for some drunk "pin the tail on the Tijuana donkey". ;) Tried what you mentioned years ago and got the leftover tape adhesive all inside the dryer drum. Not doing that again. :)

Always a search, I love the mountain hardwear piero pants, thick symthetic, very durable, and only the features you really want,but, quite unfortunately they no longer make them. Prana Stretch zions are alright, not perfect in my mind, but, I must plug for them in that I have one pair, 10 years old now, that has seen a lot and are still kicking... they did the JMT, the TRT in spring, countless gym trips and probably 400+ days climbing outside, and significant mileage scrambling off trail sliding down stuff on my butt... admitedly i have had to stitch them up multiple times in different places, and I added belt loops, and they probably wont last another 6 months of climbing, but, regardless, their life span greatly exceeded my expectations...

Also look at some of Arcteryx's treking pants, like the Lefroy. They are a little lighter weight and are also stretchy and wear well.

Alex, for $200, are they more durable than 10 pairs of jeans? Probably better for high-stepping, but...
I have a lot of ancient beaten-down clothes to get rid of, and I'm at a point in my life ready to buy high quality stuff if it lasts. But in my experience, I beat the crap out of stuff whether it is cheap or expensive. Wifey got me to buy some hiking boots nearly $200 a few years back, and I shredded those as quickly as a $30 pair of Sierra Lights from a Big Five sale. None of them last when you jam them in cracks. She got me to buy some Prana $80 canvas-looking pants at some point, and I split the knees the first time I was in a chimney. She gave me some nice modern synthetic pull-over sweater that I melted holes in with a minor burn-down-the-campsite incident trying to start wet logs on a rainy day. Even my Patagonia micro-puffy has big holes in it from my first day, squeezing between a tree trunk and the rock face on some climb.
So are these $200 pants that I have to think "OMG don't spoil the $200 pants" every time I do something, or can I just be a kid and scrabble through manzanita and haul around granite boulders to build a campfire ring and squeeze through chimneys without thinking about it? Do they have a nice sheen/texture that gets pilly/spoiled by stuff like that?

My thoughts are similar......a pair of "trousers" (to keep my trout at bay!) that top out at $189 may prove to be worth 7 or 8 seasons, instead of $40 painter "trousers" per year. I too abuse my "trousers" in search of obscurities; thrashing through manzanita, chaparral, grainy choss chimneys, the usual free and aid jaunts etc. Why on earth would I spend almost $300 on low quality gear when I can extend the investment over multiple seasons!?!

I always wore heavy duty cotton work pants but if you might run into rain this is an issue or if temps are cold cotton work pants or jeans suck. I don't have a problem spending $$ on gear if it will last and I definitely don't worry about wearing it or potentially damaging it. I had a pair of Patagonia pants I bought on sale 20 plus years ago that I just now retired, great spring skiing pants climbing, hiking, they did it all. I think they were the Guide Pant? I never liked the look of the Prana stuff but found a pair of the Zion pants on sale and really like them, nice weight and easy to high step in, something I couldn't fully appreciate with cotton work pants.
Just get something that fits and is comfortable and on sale if you can find it. No need to spend $200

Has anyone found something comparable to the Chouinard Rock Bottoms? They were great for cold days in JTree; like a tough, functional pair of sweat pants.
I think BD made something similar for a while, but seem to have discontinued that style (assuming I'm not making this up).

Well, what eva dudes. I'm jus stoked that Lycra is back for the girls! Now code named yoga pants, and seems they only come in black. It's hard to focus on rock cracks tho when ya got all butt cracks poken ya in the nose😜
