I am currently trying to plan a 40th birthday getaway with some friends in early April.

Are there any recommendations for a 3-4 day either tent camping or hut to hut hike in the eastside sierras that will probably be mostly snow free in early April?

Thanks!

Early April usually has snow in the back country... Bring skis...

Or alternatively a mellowish (avi wise) ski tour - open to ideas.

grab the Dan Mingori ski guide to the Eastern Sierra. It's one of the best references for planning, ski or hike. Unless its a dreadfully low precip winter, there will be plenty to tour, and generally speaking snow stability is good by then from melt/thaw. Get that book though, you wont regret it. Also it's sierrA . one majestic range : )

If you really want to hike and not ski in April, maybe look a bit more east... Inyo Mountains. Snowshoeing is a fun activity that requires little skill or experience too. Or keep to lower elevations like Bishop, maybe Buttermilks area.

Cool I'll take a look at the guide - thanks.

How far south down the PCT would I have to go to for it to be snow free early April?

My wife and I hiked the Tehachapi to Walker Pass segment in April. It was great! Depending on the year, you might also be able to do Walker Pass to Kennedy Meadows. Beyond that, yer hitting snow. That T'hatch to Walker was very pretty with one section having a big field of blue bells. The desert stretches to Walker had some crazy winds, tho, and as we were hitch hiking back to T'hatch, it was hard to even stand up at the pass. Wow.

Mammoth to Tuolumne Meadows, then down the road to Lee Vining.(need car shuttle)
Without knowing what this winter will be like, it's hard to advise.

If you wanted a shorter tour, ski out of Mammoth Lakes Basin, over Mammoth Pass, and down to Red's Meadow.

And then hit the June Lake Brewery to re-hydrate and celebrate the 40 years...

April would be better in Yosemite Valley.

Sierra Yurt and Cat Skiing out of Bridgeport has what you want. Word is that they're opening a third? yurt this year Ski in yurt.
I did a week on the east side in April for my 40th/Baby Shower. Twin Lakes Skiing from a house with a dozen OTH ski bums. Miles of longboard skating. And then climbing and guns and sh#t. Pretty funny that I'm a pacifist and all my homies showed up looking like Mujahaddin.

The yurt-cat thing sounds interesting...bridgeport has a Mexican restaurant now and rumors of a brewery coming down the pike...? I wouldn't get caught in the Mujahdeen costume though with all the local retired Marines and LEO's ..
