Thoughts?
I'll start, just a snippett to get startedand I'll jump in later.

Stunning, magnificent, but probably won't have the impact of the first one.
Why Peter and the Wolf?

I thought the new "Blade Runner" was an excellent science fiction movie, and a worthy successor of the original. Not really a sequel so much as a real successor. Both movies posed interesting questions about the rights of sentient beings and what it means to be a sentient being.

This is the first movie in years (decades?) I felt I needed to see a second time in the theater. It's a lot to process. It will never have the mass appeal of the first movie, but it's a brilliant piece of visual artwork and cinema in it's own right and tackles some extremely complicated questions about what it means to be human.

P.S.:What is Luv for that matter?

Haven't seen the new one but a thought on the original- Replicant Roy, in the end, had more of a sense of humanity than most humans. So, to whom does humanity belong?

I pretty much agree with this review:

"It is not the easiest to follow; the story-telling is its weakest aspect, and the long third act (of a very long film) has elements that are simply incomprehensible. It’s a big problem, or was for me, because despite the way the film had ravished me with its visuals, its phenomenal production design, and its uncompromisingly elegant mise-en-scene, I walked out of my screening confused rather than sated. One character - played by Jared Leto, sprouting some seriously fruity dialogue - had me flummoxed and frustrated. Blade Runner 2049 admirably raises big, big questions, but less admirably refuses to provide same simple answers."

I love good sci-fi. I went in hoping I would like it and I didn't. The story was weak and in places didn't make sense. I think the director tried to make up for the weak story with cinematic "atmosphere". The look of the film was very good, just wish the story was better.

Good dark atmosphere but sound track too loud and action and violence trying to make up for lack of story interest. A good director but constrained by previous film. Loved the sequence toward the end with crazy music as cars fly through storm. That seemed a lot like a parody of the genre. Then the usual mano a mano to decide the fate of mankind and replicant kind.

Pretty much my reaction when I saw it yesterday. It WAS a long movie, but I enjoyed the story. One of those you think you need to see again, to pick up on a variety of details.

I will not reveal what the questions are. They're good though. So is the film.

Shoulda had Dylan doing the crooning. He loved the first. Hasn't commented on the second.

SCOTT I used to watch a lot of MTV, and I suddenly realized that, “Hang on. There’s a shot in there from ‘Blade Runner.’ ” It had sneaked out and was influencing filmmakers and rock ‘n’ roll artists. I got a call from Bob Dylan — he had a lawyer contact me, and I went in and I spent the whole evening with Bob Dylan because he adored “Blade Runner” so much. So I knew it had made its dent.

I enjoyed it, though maybe not as much as the first one. The story is complex and in parts, maybe didn't make too much sense. Possibly some of that would resolve with seeing it again.

I went and saw it in IMAX, which was worth it for the gorgeous visuals. But this is the 2nd IMAX film I've gone to recently(Dunkirk was the other) where the soundtrack was extremely loud, at some points nearly drowning out the dialog. I haven't noticed this mix issue as much in non-IMAX versions, and it's unfortunate.

The first film was a game changer and I have been a fan for years. I own the 6 CD digital box set.

I loved BR2049. It lived up to the hype for me. Have seen it twice already. It is stunning visually in a way few films have ever been. From the opening scenes above the "farmland" to the cyberpunk city scapes, it touched me cinematographically in all the right ways. Some brilliance in its sometimes stark simpleness as well as its signature scenery of cyberpunk city visual overload.

Hans Zimmer did a FANTASTIC job with the sound and score with some original work woven with an homage to Vangelis. Haunting.

I agree with some of the story line-near the end, but it finished strong and I will love this movie for a long, long time. Great cast. Gosling was brilliant in my opinion. Ford was good but one of the weaker actors in the film!

I loved it.
There are some things I'm confused about. Are the answers in the film and will I see them on a second viewing? I don't know, but I certainly will see it again.

We have the first one on Blu-Ray and watch it every few years. I still love it even thought I know everything that will happen.

Contractor: I think that was meant to be one of the central themes of the original film (obviously)--how do we define humanity? Replicants had become so real that the line between human and replicant became blurred hence Decker's angst. Was he simply turning off a machine or rather killing something that was as human as himself..or perhaps more so? Haven't seen the new one yet. Perhaps tonight. By the way--Howdy Largo!
Want to come visit sometime soon. Will be in Ventura over the winter. Hope to make it down to Venice Beach.

I liked it a lot. It could have easily been tightened up, however. Cutting a good 30 min. would help keep things moving. I saw some little films meant to fill in the gap between the first BR and BR2049. One angle that I'm growing a little more uncomfortable with the longer I think about it was the pretty crass exploitation of women. Typical Hollywood, I suppose. Now, I'm a cis male, hetero-normative guy, and love to check out a fine female form, don't get me wrong, but so many films rely on hot naked women to hold a scene. And many of these women are treated poorly in this film, to say the least. Many scenes of fully dressed men ogling young, naked women. The violence against them, too, in their helpless state is tough to watch. There is a nasty villainette, a reall femme fatal who kicks some ass, but many of the big scenes rely on display of flesh. I think we see Ryan Gosling in a tank. That's about it. Your thoughts?

Bad,

I really wish there would have been no nudity at all. I rarely watch rated R films, and this thing could have been beautifully pg-13 without the gratuitous nudity.

That said, I felt most of the nudity was to showcase the human body as a beautiful aspect of humanity rather than to portray anything sexual. Especially the uncomfortably long scene where that female replicant is "birthed." That whole scene was a bit much in my opinion.

But I saw no "violence against them" other than the "red light district" scence.....and if you ask me, the same scene with prostitutes coming up and hanging all over men represents just as much violence against men as it does the women. Another scene I could have done without.
