Hey all, last night (Oct. 17th 2017) my friends car was broken into in DC and her bag was stolen. Here's a more complete list of what was taken:
-Full double rack of BD ultralights
-18 alpine draws
-70m Dry Rope
-harness
-two pairs of shoes
-grigri
-other personal gear
Police have been contacted, and will be searching forums, but if anyone has any information at all, or had success in tracking down their stolen gear in the past, please contact. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think the typical junkie that breaks into cars usually has no idea what climbing gear is used for, doesn't sell stuff on online forums and just throws it away when no fellow junkie will buy it. I'd bet your only chance is to wander around and look wherever they sell stuff to each other on the street (which I personally wouldn't do).

I've never heard of anyone getting their stuff back after a car break-in except for the goalie on my ice hockey team in San Francisco who tracked down his stolen goalie pads in some crack den underneath a freeway overpass near where he had parked. Totally crazy, but he played college hockey in his gear and was attached to it!

^^^^^^^

My van was broken into in DC back in 2001. I found almost all of my climbing gear... rack, ropes, ice tools, etc laying on neighboring lawns and in near by trash cans. Once they got a block or two they realized they didn't know what to do with it and dropped it.

Good luck.

Welcome to liberal America. If you confront the theives you will get mugged by Antifa. In Nevada where I live now, I dont even have to lock my car or house. San Francisco and DC are hives of scum and villainy these days. Sorry that your friend's gear got stolen. Check the hock shops and local gyms. Gear thieves sometimes post flyers at gyms. I have seen this happen in Sacramento. Again, sorry your gear got jacked. I hope my political rant doesnt offend you. I just think its time for people with brains to get out of Liberal inner cities while we still have something worth stealing, even if all we have left is our dignity and freedom. Those are becoming scarce in too many places these days.

I will concede that Reno and Vegas are not safe to leave things unlocked. Too many gangbangers and addicts from California there. If Trump builds a wall, I hope that California is on the outside of it. My greatest concern is that California will follow me here. Im psyched that I got to say goodbye to state income tax. People where I live now work for a living so we dont need to tax everyone to pay for promiscuous bumbs and welfare queens.

Jeeebus, chainsaw it aint liberal or conservative where f*#king cars get broken into. You apparently live in semi rural NV, lucky you, just not as many people so not as many thieves. Criminals target places like sf, chicago, dc cause people have sh#t to steal in spades! All over! Lots of it! It also happens in very conservative places like birmingham, dallas, etc. Leave it alone please, just help the guy out instead.

There has been a recent uptick in both violent and property crime in California, but compared to 20 years ago, crime rates are way down.

This chart is from the Public Policy Institute of CA's recent report on Crime Trends in California. It's careful and short, and worth a read:

The real shocker is the explosion in thefts from cars in SF. There were 2 1/2 times as many cars broken into in 2016 as in 2010. That's unheard of. Usually it takes a decade or more for crime rates to jump that much.

In most European cities many people don't even lock their cars so they
don't suffer the added indignity of broken windows. You're really asking
for it if you leave anything in yer car anywhere, except Nevada, Wyoming,
and Montana. ;-)

I don't think that fact sheet you cited shows urban and rural violent crime rates are basically the same. The graphic on the second page does, but the graphic on the first page does not. It shows the rate of violent crime is twice as high in cities as in the country.

It's hard to know how to reconcile these differences. The statistics differ because they are based on two completely differently data sources. The rates that are almost the same are from the NCVS -- the National Crime Victimization Survey. As its name says, the NCVS asks people whether they've been a crime victim. The other data comes from the UCR -- the Uniform Crime Reporting Program. As its names says, it is based on crimes reported to law enforcement and passed on to the FBI.

There are problems with each of these sources. Since the NCVS surveys victims, it can't include murders. On the other hand, many crimes are not reported to the police, so the UCR clearly misses some (many?) crimes.

People are using data mining of news papers, etc, to get around these problems. Only time will tell if these give better information.

FWIW, the rate for violent death is higher in the country than in the city. That's because the death rate from accidents is eight times the death rate from murder. And death by accidents are much more common in the country than in the city.

When I lived in Redding it was common for people to test my doorknob to see if it was unlocked. I could hear em jiggling it at night.
You must live in a gated community dmt if you don't have to lock your house up

Not to mention that anecdotal affirmations are not admissable evidence.

In other words, 99% of the populace.
