Very sad news for East Side community
http://www.mountainlight.com/newsArticle.php?Mountain-Light-Gallery-Closing-130
It is with heavy hearts that the Rowell and Cushman families announce the closing of the Mountain Light Gallery on Main Street in Bishop, California. The families are very grateful to the staff of Mountain Light, the guest artists, the local community and customers that have supported the business for more than 16 years. The doors to the Mountain Light Gallery will close for the final time on October 31, 2017. We are still working on our plans to keep Galen and Barbara's legacy going in other ways once the gallery has closed.
Since Galen and Barbara's passing in August of 2002, we have held their collection of signed prints in our vault, only releasing a few prints now and then. With the closing of our physical gallery we have decided to open the vault and offer the signed prints at special sale pricing to support a fund that was founded in honor of Galen and Barbara. Mountain Light will be donating 10% of the signed print sales to the Rowell Fund for Tibet.

Sad news. Actually, it's amazing they stayed open as long as they have.

Sometimes I just hate change. This is one of those times.

Mountain Light Gallery, wonderful as it is, was always on an economic tightrope in a small market area like Bishop which has a brief tourist season.
Capitalism can be cruel....it certainly doesn’t give a pass to the arts.

A big bummer. It was always nice stopping in there. We even made a couple of purchases.

Too bad. Actually surprised it lasted this long.
I remember going there when it was in Berkeley. I was talking to the woman working there and Galen came out. Had a nice talk with him about photography for about 1/2 hour.

A bright spot in Bishop. Who could replace that little bit of civilization in a town the struggles for identity?
Glad to have visited and spent money there.
Times have changed and modern photography has been super amped-up by technology. Galen's work was good but the new stuff abundantly available is better.
Thanks for the heads-up on this!

Galen was smart enough to be and the right place at the right time, and had the talent to compose and imagine they greatest shots.

A sad day in Bishop. I helped Galen move into that old bank building. After his death it became obvious that it's days were numbered.

I remember my older brother making me walk in to the Mountain Light gallery on one of my earliest trips up the 395 to go skiing in Mammoth, so I would understand the real scale and beauty of the range. as a 19 year old I was blown away, and had a new appreciation for the state I had just moved to.
Sad to think I never went in again, But I always felt the history and legacy of Galen as I drove by. In the 10+ years since I started visiting Mammoth, but especially in the last few years, Rowell's photography and writing has become a more core inspiration for me.
These are some wonderful Rowell books that are worth adding to your collection if you don't have them already. I'm excited to visit a few times and support before the true closing.

Very sad. Glad I was able to support them.
Somehow I don't think that the patrons of Rusty's are patrons of the arts.

I suppose that ML’s biz of selling stock photos in addition to the major prints will end? I understood from Galen, that stock photos (calendars, ads, etc) was a significant part of the biz...
