Not sure how anything works in the states so thought I'd try and get some locals advice; I touch down from the UK in about a week (26th Sept) and want to know if its possible to get from Vegas to Yosemite without a car (and back again)...

Also if anyone is down for a few days climbing @ Red Rocks (27-30th Sept ish) or Yosemite 30th Sept onwards then message me :)

I once hitched from Twin Falls to Yosemite, it took 3 days though

Good luck....you will find that your former colony exacts a penalty, especially in it's western reaches, from carless presonages. Perhaps a local can show you the way.

When you get to Vegas, go into one of the climbing gyms, and ask around.

Looks doable by bus. I'd recommend flying but if you have more time than money.....

Vegas to LA Amtrak terminal by ground public transportation or Airline

Then AmtraK to Merced

Then Yarts bus to Yosemite Valley

Me ... I would just start hitchhiking .....

Pack a big water bottle and hat and sunscreen if you hitchhike!

And maybe a pen and paper to say goodbye in case nobody comes for a while. Actually a pencil is better in the off chance it rains.

Probably banned in Yosemite after Ansel's trip, but in Merced (I am told) anything goes.

I recommend Craigslist ride share, but if you hitch should be piss easy to hitch a ride to Barstow, then hitch 58 to the 395. Lots of traffic going north on 395, once you are at the 120 (Tioga Pass road) you are home free. All these roads have a lot of traffic although hitching will be easier during the day, but the camping is good along all these roads.

edit; Actually I just realized I (and a lot of folks on the eastside) are headed to Facelift next week. I was planning on going the westside on the way up, but if you find yourself on the 395 or barstow on Tuesday let me know, I could divert and give you a ride to the valley

edit; just read the OP and realized you arrive in Vegas on the 26th. I know at least one vegas resident is going to Facelift, maybe you could catch a round trip from vegas for a week in the valley.

I actually agree with Jon Beck. Back roads could get lonely but his route suggestion always has cars going by. If you are clean and have nice looking gear (as opposed to rags and ancient stained hole-covered backpack) it will probably be easier to get rides.

For what it is worth:

Allegiant Air: Las Vegas to Stockton California after 10/2 One-Way $65.00 to $43.00:

https://www.allegiantair.com/lookup/md5/1506012069000izuhdzd4kwjm60a?FL_dair=LAS&FL_aair=SCK&FL_1_ddte=10132017&FL_2_ddte=10172017&dlSource=HomePageDeals&search_type=F&flnc=2&FL_1_arlc=G4&FL_2_arlc=G4&adu=2&show_calendar=1#!&init=_1506012123546&tab=flights&m=gSZEzlPsOfuovo_ECso27Z48I3rA_oNuoX0VTnaXPJU

Amtrak:

https://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak

Stockton, California to Merced, California on Amtrak = $15.00 One-Way

YARTS:

http://yarts.com/

Merced, California to Yosemite = $13.00 One-Way

Total Cost = $93 to less

I just remembered that you'll probably have checked baggage on Allegiant,so that charge would be added to the posted flight cost...

Thanks for all the suggestions, although I think I'll pass on the DejaVu offer https://www.yelp.com/biz/deja-vus-adult-emporium-las-vegas-2 but thanks ;-)

Money is tight and so I think flying is out, would be willing to share gas for a ride for sure. Will put an add on craigslist too.

The bus options don't seem good, the YARTS bus from Fresno seems to stop Sept 15th and greyhound don't do the route. I found a thing called BunduBus which advertises the route but their customer service is shocking and the route is nowhere to be seen on their timetable. https://www.bundubus.com/yosemite_transportation.php

Ideally I'd be travelling up from Vegas around 29th/30th after a few days in red rocks but would go earlier if it meant getting a ride. @JohnBeck can you put me in touch with your friend in Vegas who will be going to facelift? Would be happy to split petrol/driving.

@Velvet, if i'm still in Vegas 3rd Oct then for sure I'll jump in with you, message me your number and i'll drop you a message/call nearer the time!

If all else fails I'll get my cardboard sign out

You'll probably get a lot more climbing in if you stay at Red Rocks.
The weather might be better too.
If you'd stayed in Old Blighty and did 100 laps on High Willhays you could say you did El Cap and you would have saved yourself a load of trouble and cash.

This bloke knows how nice it is on High Willhays...

Not joking about bringing a British flag.....Americans go goo goo, ga ga about anything to do with their former masters.
