Driving out of the Valley yesterday, I noted the new construction occurring in the Camp Four parking lot. The lot was fenced or taped off and a backhoe was working near the west end. As I glanced left across the road at the temporary parking lot, my wife suddenly exclaimed, “Holy XXXX! They just knocked down the kiosk!”

Many of us have camped at the base of this tiny alter awaiting the opportunity for a campsite. I'm not sure when the kiosk was built, but I'll remember it as a place to meet new friends and old, check the message board, and get info on routes. Stories anyone?

I'm sure that many people standing in line in the dawn cold grew to hate the sight of that kiosk.

Kevin, there was parking next to Camp 4....you must recall people sleeping in their vans. No bail granted for an offense like that in today's Valley!

Hopefully the kiosk, or at least important bits of it (notice board?) can be saved, and be part of the proposed Yosemite climbing museum.

My earliest memories 1958/60 in the Valley at camp four you could drive your car in and camp anywhere (no designated sites). Camp four was the only camp in the valley that allowed pets. Some people were parked almost up to the Yos. Falls trail. Biggest changes in the valley I remember came after the Stoneman's Meadow mess. Got a ticket for illegal camping the following spring. But I suppose changes were inevitable.

Really? Dammit Jim, some of my fondest memories were discretely sleeping in my truck and reading Stephen King novels by headlamp in that parking lot. Then wake up early and collect a shitload of cans for 10 cents each..

Damn!

Someone should have stolen it and put it in a secret museum along with the ahwahnee sign, where we could go reminisce about our lives in the company of our valued things and memories.

Or not :-)

I feel sorry for other people who aren't like me.

back in the early 90's, after a late night in the mountain room bar, went back to C4 and there was a picnic table up on top of that kiosk. When i got up in the morning and i was hanging around my car, one of the rangers comes up and tries to get me to spill the beans on who did it. She says a few people seem to think it was you. I died laughing at her, not me at all. later that day, met up with the boys and we all laughed.

Wouldn't seriously consider that line for Camp4 in the spring or summer. But I like the place in the winter:

Werner, thanks for the info on the "old" Kiosk. I wasn't sure when it was built. Do you have photos/stories of the one before, or before that?

To the best of my recollection:

I remember the NPS hiring Cowboy Larry's GF, Chris Perry, specifically to work at the brand new kiosk they installed in '73.
It was on the short entrance road to the drive-through loop.
I believe Donna Pritchett may have worked there as well, but am not positive.

The Parklords later moved it to near its present (erstwhile?) location when they decided to make C4 a walk-in campground and closed off that entrance.
It may have been that it was a newer kiosk than that original one, which seems logical,
as the first was (I think) the standard type with two windows for entrances and exits.
