Hey I'm moving to Japan in October And need to find a gym and a locale crag just started trad climbing in California and don't want to lose what little progress I've made ill be stationed at iwakuni so if anyone's out there that needs a partner or just knows what's close and could tell me that would be great looked on mountain project and there's not a lot.

Other than no rock Iwakuni is not a bad duty station. I was there in 79-80. The area around the base is not all screwed up like Okinawa. IMHO it is the best base in Japan to experience the local culture.

You might boulder on the seawall, don't worry the rock here is not going away.

Looks like you are not too far from South Korea...

We used to catch a hop to South Korea. They had martial law back then, but a great place. There was not a lot of MAC flights through Iwakuni, so we would go up to Tokyo to the busy AF bases.

More or less than other woman???...

The answer is yes.

To the OP, when I went home (Japan) a couple of years ago, I posted on rockclimbing.com and I got several useful replies. I hear that the site is almost dead these days, but maybe you can give it a shot?

Nita - A hop is basically hitchhiking on Military Airlift Command aircraft. They have to give empty seats to military traveling on leave. A friend of mine got a ride on a generals private jet because there was an empty seat. I always ended up flying on C141 jump seats. Uncomfortable but a great price.

You want to get in touch with Jan here on the taco stand.
She spent many years teaching there and could probably answer many
of your questions!

Ah memories! While mission training in 1964 I was in the first stick to ever jump out of a C141...never got to land in one.

Wonderful to conjure with.

My family has several connections to Japan, all of them significant and saying that Japan has much to teach us.

Dunno for sure about climbing of the sort you may be looking for.

I was stationed in Iwakuni 1998-2001. We climbed at Mikuradake, 40 minutes away. Marines called it "Three Peaks". Solid granite, locals had hand written topos. We got copies tons of fun. Weather unreliable so not good tourist destination!
