Way ahead of it's time.....hmmm, come to think, it was a product of it's time and place. Discoverd today, it would be "nicely bolted"....meaning bolts slightly over, maybe, a body length apart. Well done Peter and John....you established climbs that still give today's climbers GREAT pause!

Nice effort from a kid riding a bus through Boston with a WWII bomb he got at an Army Surplus store.
He showed me that an unremarkable (for the times) area like Devil's Lake could make you stand up and be glad to be a climber.

Pete Cleveland is a great climber and an even better man. Not only did he do some amazing climbs in his day, but he also raised 2 upstanding kids by himself. I climbed and hung out with Pete back at Devil,s lake in the mid 70,s and 80,s, he was very smooth climber and taught us young derelicts quite abit and not all of it was just climbing. Club salute to Pete. Cheers

Pete Cleveland - RESPECT! When I was young and in my prime we heard rumors of humble climbing Gods from Devils Lake, a place where the climbing standards defied comprehension. Looking back, it was all true. They were giants, Pete and John, and still cast a giant shadow. Sometimes it's sufficient to share the same planet with such people, and to have just enough personal experience to appreciate what they have wrought.
Again I say RESPECT.

Yep, great last paragraph...the absurdity of it all.
I've stood at the bottom of Superpin and nearly sh#t myself just looking at the thing...I'm a horrible chicken but still! Even looking at it from a perch in a nearby formation induces watery bowels.
Can't even get both feet off the ground on the Gill Thimble...that's another ring-twitcher, imagining the bygone steel guardrail.
The Cleveland 'summit' photo is an all-time classic, even more so with knowledge of the backstory.
Hats off to JG & PC.

What a momentous climb by an amazing climber. I'm disappointed at how few 'hits' this posting has received. I'm sure that if Superpin had been done in CA--even with its very modest height, this anniversary would be getting much more attention on here. The article is an excellent one as well, highlighting not only Peter but John and others as well as The Needles and Devil's Lake--2 out of the mainstream areas that have had an out-of-proportion impact on our sport.

Needles bump. Anyone know the status of the other superpin route these days. There was a long thread about that being chopped a couple of years ago.

Ha ha!
But can he find his way back to his car?
I remember being lost and hearing the cars on the road, but only finding dead ends when I tried to reach it.
