Hello there,

I知 reaching the Yosemite valley by rented car around 6th or 7th of August. I should stay something like a week and I値l be on my own, hopping to find a climbing partner. I read that it is quite easy to find another lonely climber at camp 4 yet I知 already sharing my plans in advance so perhaps it will catch somebody's eye and would love to join...

Very first question, anybody interested to climb with me in the valley? I知 quite experienced rock climber and alpinist. Sport-climbing 殆ise, I知 now pushing 5.10d grades, eventually I知 starting some 5.11... But I知 open to even much easier stuff, especially when it comes to trad climbing (5.8-5.9). Well, let痴 say I値l be just happy to climb a bit in Yosemite and so I知 very open to meet somebody like me and start with some easy lines, or to be taken by some local climbers and being introduced to some classics...

And a second question would be about the gear. I知 flying from Europe and will spend in US some 5 weeks... Thus, I can稚 bring all my climbing equipment. Would you guys think it would be enough to bring my personal kit and leave ropes, cams, quickdraws and all heavier gear home? Do you think it could work out as most of the climbers in area will have the equipment anyway?

PS. We might just share the ride from San Francisco as well.

Many thanks for any output and greetings from Europe,
Dominik

Hi Dominik,

I can't help you since I'm in Canada, but I'm curious about climbing around Luxembourg. I won't be going there soon either, just curious. Do you happen to have any photos? What are the destination areas close by? How far do you drive? What's the camping like?

Thanks and good luck!

Hi Ben,

Sorry I see your post only now... Are you still going here? Can give you quite a lot of info about local cracks and those not far away in Belgium, Germany and France;)

I can't speak from personal experience, but I hear partner searches get better results on Mountain Project's forums.

Keep your plans flexible, do not commit to climb with someone until you are in the valley. Someone you meet online may seem perfect, but upon meeting them you may decide you do not want to climb with them, more awkward to backout if you made firm plans. It is very easy to get partners in the valley

The second week in August can be hot as hell.

Finding partners during those hot spells could prove more difficult in the Valley.

During the hot spells, Tuolumne Meadows could bear better fruit?

Hey guys, thanks for all those suggestions, sounds good! I'll keep myself flexible, that's for sure.

Actually, are they guides in Yosemite? A friend of mine told me you can probably hire a guide who can take you to a big wall. It's definitely the last option but on the other hand, I won't be in Yosemite again any soon, nor in States... So if I'm already there and ready to climb, why not make the best out of it...

Yes, there are guides, but I believe only 1 company is allowed to officially guide in the park. Unfortunately I can't recall the name, but I'm sure someone else will be able to provide it.

Buy the gear you don't bring, then sell it on the Camp 4 bulletin board a couple days before you leave. It is HOT in August, and most likely smokey.

If you're looking for a quality route that will be cool, hike up to the Book of Job. Shade all day with an air conditioning effect from cool air coming out of the crack. You'll need a competent partner, it's burly old school solid 5.10 crack climbing with some wide....seven pitches. You won't feel like a wussy for taking a rest day.
As others have said, early August is usually too hot for most climbs.

If you only have a week, hire a guide to get you the top of el Cap if you can afford it. It will be an incredible experience.

I concur with Don Paul. Once you get up a few pitches on El Cap you usually get a nice, cooling breeze.

Sounds good! Well it all depends on how much the guide will ask for it... Do you have any contact or suggestions?

Well, ok, that's not going to happen... Don't tell me there is no freelance big wall climber who offers to take you over the big wall? Maybe not, maybe that's too European way:) Well just in case you hear about somebody, let me know... Otherwise I'll be just trying my luck in camp 4!
