Make that $399.95 a year, or $39.95 monthly. I saw mention of this on another climbing blogsite by an irate blogger, but didn't understand what 3rd party hosting meant.
Photobucket defines third-party hosting (what is with using 3rd instead of third?) as embedding an image or photo on another website. This includes embedding photos on forums, eBay, Etsy, Craigslist or another other site on the Internet that is not Photobucket.com
So far, on ST, I've only noticed missing photos from DMT, per this example:
It's likely that many of the older threads on ST will lose photos, if those here that linked photos don't pay up.
Here's the new Photobucket terms & pricing:
• Free account : Each individual Member gets one free account that provides 2 GB of free storage or space available for your original photo files, or videos under 10min. The free account does not allow any image linking or 3rd party image hosting. If a free account Member exceeds their Content Limit, their account will be immediately suspended and they will need to become a “Paying Member” (defined below) in order to continue accessing their account. You can upgrade to a Plus account at any time.
• Plus Account : The Plus Account offers several paid options that may give the Paying Member more storage, bandwidth, 3rd party image hosting, image linking and/or other services as outlined below. Once and during such period of time in which you subscribe to and pay for a Plus Account, we will consider you a "Paying Member." Please note that all Plus Account subscriptions are billed annually at the commencement of the service. Photobucket may also offer a monthly billing option for its Plus Accounts (see terms and restrictions, below).
• Available Plus Account Plans : Photobucket offers the following Plus Account Plans:
o Plus 100 Plan: 102 GB of Storage for $99.99 / Year. The Plus 100 Plan allows for unlimited image linking but does not allow 3rd party image hosting.
o Plus 500 Plan: 500 GB of Storage and unlimited bandwidth for $399.99 / Year. The Plus 500 Plan allows for unlimited image linking and unlimited 3rd party image hosting.

And I know I'm not going to pay Photobucket $399.95 a year for a site that I find slow & somewhat buggy.
Once ST enabled it's own photo-sharing, I mostly stopped using Photobucket.
As of today, Yahoo's Flickr photo-sharing site is still free, fast, & friendly.

Changing the rules in the middle of the game is the classic definition of "chickenshit".
In over ten years, mine's only showing 17% full.
I just put this one up this morning:
But every time I try to use it, it's a bigger pain in the ass than the time before. What used to be simple and straightforward is now a cumbersome process.

Yes, +1 hate on Photobucket. I don't have a lot on there, so I'll save what I really want and not worry about the rest. For now, I'm going with Google photo, free for pretty high quality pics, certainly good enough for sharing on the web.
Oh, one tip: Looks like you have to ad ?.jpg to the url to get it to stick on forums.

I got 1,000 shots there "for free" and got miffed virtually every time I used the service (slow, slow, slow).
When it came time to pony up, I said that's fine, g'bye.
They can kiss my ass if they think their shitty service is worth what they're asking.
Beautiful shot, BTW, Chaz.

I pay for Dropbox, excellent storage, lots of great features. It is crucial to my business. They do have a free service.

Even prior to this, PB had become increasingly annoying to use.
Glitchy and interminably slow, I assumed from the ads loading. Pony'd up for 'Pro', fine when you're logged in but the same ad rodeo to GET logged in, and I clear history and cookies pretty often.
Would love more input on alternatives. Flickr, Dropbox, Snapfish, what else?
Such a pain...

Flickr has continued to support linking. Their links don't identify the owner of the account, which is nice. But dev efforts to fix bugs aren't super fast. Compounding it is the sale of Yahoo. Maybe it will make it better. As long as you're backing up locally, meaning you keep a copy on your machine and you back up to an external drive from that copy, then your 'extra' copy online is just a free bonus back up for those that you keep available there.

Yeah. I use it mostly with the iPad APP, but it has gotten harder to use with the screen freezing after even simple things like adding a photo or justgetting a link.
No way I'm paying a Franklin for that level of grief.

I tried to go onto the PB site to delete my account that I have not used for years because their site is awful. Could not even get logged on. I looked at their prices for canvas prints and they are double what everyone else charges. No thanks.

The correct thing for Photobucket to do would be to grandfather in pics that are already hosted, prior to whatever future cutoff date they settle on.
I'm guessing they won't do that, though.
