As Trump moves to privatize America's national parks, visitor costs may rise

http://flip.it/2WoZ8o

They're systematically underfunding everything in their crosshairs.

It's like poisoning someone then charging for the antidote.

The nps has been underfunded for decades. It's quite bi partisan

John Garder, director of budget and appropriations of the National Parks Conservation Association
Garder says focusing on privatization of park operations is a “misguided approach to dealing with the park service’s funding woes”. Instead, he believes it would be more beneficial for Zinke to provide a budget that increases funding for deferred maintenance and park staff, particularly rangers, who play an important role in engaging with visitors.

This guy is clueless. Of course increased funding would be helpful. However increased funding for rangers would do little to help the deferred maintenance. "Engaging with visitors" does not fix things. And for most all of the maintenance work done in the parks- neither do the rangers- as few actually do maintenance.

America’s national parks need a staggering $11.5bn worth of overdue road and infrastructure repairs.

I'd rather see the roads and infrastructure crumble and these places return to a more natural state, preferably under the management of NFS or BLM.

Incompetent politicians underfund incompetent land managers.

Meanwhile, we have plenty of bombs.

Double taxing people to use public lands may be considered a filter to keep the riff raff out.

As it is we are headed for a melt-down as so many people want to use the best spots. Restricting access to places like Mt Whitney, Half Dome, Zion Narrows, Angel's Landing and many others.

It can be handled easily by good engineering minds. The mess at the General Sherman Tree in Sequoia was handled very well in recent years.

Solutions need to increase number of visitors and quality of experience while decreasing impact. Public education is a very key part of the solution as well.

After frequent vacations staying in BLM and USFS land east of the Sierra Nevada, I've had a very high opinion of those agencies. But to be honest, the reason is not because they are actively performing lots of stuff, but rather because there is road access and not much else. That is all I want.

As soon as you introduce the burden of entertaining millions of visitors like our national parks have, things get ugly and complicated. There is a pretty wide spectrum of humanity to cater to. I'm not so quick to pass judgment on how to manage all that, but I am definitely a fan of giant parking structures outside of Yosemite, beefed up public transit access, and maglev trains going around the valley at frequent intervals. Maybe some golf carts for people with handicap placards. Need a way to accommodate international travelers who don't have those... but also want to guard against just giving them first come first served to fat lazy people.

Oh, why I decided to post here. I am presently quite peeved with USFS because of my experience this weekend. I spent a few days at Rincon Point (a beach between Ventura and Santa Barbara) with my kids and my wife. Plan was free dispersed camping 5 miles away in USFS land (Los Padres National Forest). It's green on Google Maps, named as a USFS road would be, but turns out to be heavily signed as private property and then electric gated by Chevron! WTF!!!! We drove for a couple of hours probing multiple entrances to Los Padres National Forest, and eventually ended up in Rose Canyon deep into Wheeler Gorge area. Even there, it's all pay campgrounds 100% full with signs saying to only camp in the campgrounds. It's a monstrously big area that is public land with no access.

Pretty big suckage.

NutAgain, I strongly agree with your solutions for Yosmite. There are places in this world that everyone needs to see and it is good for them and good for the world. Despite many who will disagree, it all needs to be more like Disneyland.

On Saturday I spend 4 hours in solitude in the Virgin River Narrows in Zion while thousands of people stirred the water into milt in the lower gorge.

When I visit Yosemite Falls I am frequently the only one there.

I can do this because I have hacked the system by coming really early in the morning of late in the evening at night.

Everyone wants to see these things in prime time. There will never be solitude in prime time.

Bravecowboy- how many of those workers busting thier asses are rangers?

If you want to reduce the amount of deferred maintenance in our national parks then you are going to have to allocate more funding to the people who are not in the public eye. The people who actually do maintence work

Seems like more of a Google maps problem than a USFS problem

I don't know if wilmot was on a work release program, or was a volunteer. If the latter, he knew what he was getting into.

Two agencies who's mandate is to sell off stuff in the public trust. Great idea.

How about we give it back to the First People we stole it from?
