Hey, East Siders:

I have to be up in Mammoth area tomorrow. Are any of the local crags climbable, the bases reasonably clear of snow?

I was referring to the immediate area around Mammoth. Since doing some reading, I would think ONLY Warming Wall, maybe. All the other little crags are out--probably for a least a month. And since when is Pine Creek Mammoth?

As of Memorial Day, Warming Wall was climbable but you had to walk on snow to get there (not a big deal).

Gong Show crag in Rock Creek was good to go.

Whoa, Gong show? Wow. I guess basically south facing. I think we might now going biking that day. But good to know!

Yeah, Guyman, Dike Wall might be climbable late Sept. this year!

It's a long hike into the Dike Wall right now. Lake Mary Rd is still closed.

I'd be surprised if the snow bank on the north side of the Dike Wall gets low enough this year at all...to climb more than just the top half of those routes. Last Summer it was still really big (did it ever melt out?) and this winter was so much bigger.

Has anyone been up to Clark? I'm curious as to how the sage and other grouncover is growing back after so much snow. We've been working too much to get up to the Eastside at all this spring. Bummed!

Yeah, Ruppel, when I read Lake Mary road was closed, I realized the immediate Mammoth area is out for climbering for, well, ever! I'll post pics of our ride. BTW, it's going to be 100+ in Bishop for at least a week! Hot times in the city. Ouch.

Sigh...Jeff. It's 40 miles. We had options. Just wanted to know if anyone had hit the local crags. Believe it or not, we can't see the crags of Mammoth from Bishop. We opted for a bike ride, which began and ended south of Mammoth.

@Jim: I don't know if Cardinal is accessible or not, and I DO want to meet Don but haven't yet. We've chilled a bit with Eric Beck and Russ McLean and a couple of other locals. I've really enjoyed Don's contributions to TACO. We've climbed already in Pine Creek and we'll be back soon, probably in the next couple of days. Even on hot days, you can scurry into the shade and get some things done in the late afternoon, although we are settling into a serious heatwave for the next week or so.

Proof of today's crime:

Get out there and move! Life is short.

I assume Crystal Crag and Patricia Bowl are out for a while? Hoping to find somewhere to escape the heat wave...

Oh, man, those will be out for a LONG time. Patricia bowl will have snow at the base--probably deep and steep--at least until August, maybe all year, since it's so high an N-facing. Check out the Gong Show, but given the heat, wait until the afternoon, and beware the creek crossing. I bet it's gnar this year.

The creek crossing for Gong Show is casual. There's a huge log across the stream.
