Any new updates from anyone? The last post said "The ropes leading up the death slabs are not in the best condition". Anyone have more definitive information on which were bad and why (core shots), etc?

This is evidence of laziness and indirect entitlement.

Years ago there were no fixed lines.

When a fixed line was thought to be unsafe then one's own climbing is used to ascend that section.

You don't need to know what someone else said days ago or weeks ago.

The state of these fixed lines can/could change within hours later.

The only real way to evaluate them is on scene whether the rope is there or is deemed unsafe or safe at that time.

The whole half dome approach slabs can be ascended and descended at any time without any fixed lines in place.

Just use your own ropes if and when needed, not wait for someone to tell you, "Oh they are there now" and "You can get up there now".

FYI-- the fixed lines are not necessary to go up or down the death slabs-- they are just convenient. Their presence or absence shouldn't change your plans.

if the conditions of the ropes really bothers you, you should be probably be more concerned about all the rockfall on half dome...

There's a trail around the back that provides access for those who would need a fixed rope...

Years ago we had to rescue a tourist who followed the first fixed line up the slabs and then cluelessly wandered upward until he ledged out.

He called for help. He was on a ledge you could walk right about 30 feet and hit the talus.

I just walked up the talus and walked out the ledge right to him standing there all gripped out.

I took his hand and walked him off the ledge to the right into the talus.

Lame .....

Maybe he heard about the cables, saw the fixed ropes, and thought that was them.

This is the beta I received from someone else. "The 1st set are ok bouncy but thick, 2nd really good 2x thick static the last were rather shocking with lots of knots best replace them if they are feeling public spirited. They're not too long but a little wet 20m max"

I'll let others know what I find after we go up there. It's been a really wet winter and I'm sure the lines got hammered more than normal. I've been asking questions to determine if I should bring some extra rope up to replace the lines for others.

In your original post, you never mention that part nor in your subsequent posts after.

Until after my posts, you fully explain your position.

So sorry I misunderstood your full intentions, .... or are we just to guess at everything here?

Some fixed lines you can't see the upper portions too well from down below. Maybe a rock strike severed all but a couple of tiny strands in a place you can't see. Maybe these strands can hold just about body weight long enough for one to get part way up...

One time in SoYo I almost rapped off a large slung block that had numerous mostly good looking slings around it. I looked behind the block to verify the condition of the unseen portions to find that some critters had chewed away all but a few strands.
