Matthew George Cianco died on May 24 ...

The Eastside of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains has always attracted a special breed of person ...

I moved here ... 12 years ago ...

Shoot, another one of us human believers lost? My sincere condolences on the loss of such a special person in a community of such special people like you.

I've been thinking along similar lines about the people who are dear to me. Not sure what your community is like, but it seems more and more like we reserve that sense of specialness for ourselves and our own communities. And I hope that by the time my black daughter dies, that we can hold her as special too, the way that we hold you and Honky. Best to you.

I was very sad to hear about Matt. I went to high school with him in New Fairfield, CT where he graduated a year ahead of me. I am really no mountain climber, but like to follow the sport and am amazed at Matt's accomplishments. I probably hadn't seen him in 25 years since high school, but always remember him as a funny, kind, and slight crazy guy,(the good kind of crazy). Reading the articles about him it sounds like he hadn't changed much at all. He was always a great athlete and hero of our wrestling team in high school. RIP fellow Rebel.

I just saw this and was shocked (not sure why I'm shocked anymore about anything that happens in this world of climbing and BASE jumping).

I knew Matt briefly while I was living near the Eastside and visiting often to climb. I remember he called me and talked to me for a while when I was at a friend's house in Bishop, sitting around alone one night, right after my friend Michael Ybarra died in the area. I think he texted me by chance that day, not knowing I was in the area, but when he heard the reason, he immediately called. Definitely says something about his character.

We lost touch after I moved away to Utah.

I love the stories about people who fly under the radar , do amazing things, and don't spray.

Andy- Always a pleasure to read your writing.
That much drive, talent and humility in a man is rare indeed and beyond admirable. Very sorry that he is no longer living to spread his love and enthusiasm around the Sierra and his community.
I hope that he is hanging with Jerry up where the music never stops and no holds are out of reach.

Maybe Brent O or Coach will reply. Matt's list of accomplishments is huge. Super humble gentleman.

I missed this until now. I met Matt in 2007 running fitness laps on the Rostrum. I remembered that when I ran into him again in late 2015 on the Freerider. He was working out plans for a 1 day ascent with Lonnie Kauk. Solid climber, friendly, interesting guy, we talked quite awhile up there before parting ways. Very sad to hear he’s not with us anymore.
