We Scots aren't cheap, we just appreciate good value.

As a Christmas present one year, the Laird gave his gamekeeper, MacPhail, a deerstalker hat with ear-flaps. MacPhail was most appreciative and always wore it with the flaps tied under his chin to keep his ears warm in the winter winds. One cold, windy day the Laird noticed he was not wearing the hat.
"Where's the hat?" asked the Laird.
"I've given up wearing it since the accident," replied MacPhail.
"Accident? I didn't know you'd had an accident."
"Yes. A man offered me a nip of whisky and I had the earflaps down and never heard him."

Cool Chopper footage from Caltrans flying up from the East-Side to Tioga Pass. You just have to endure the horrendous commercial to get to it.

Damn, that is a LOT of snow!

Me too....thanks Walleye. I was trying to send that link, but had to split because I was nearly late to my grandson's baseball game. Will you be in TM or the Valley this summer Walter? If so let's have a beer.

Found the vid on youtube:

Check out the slide in Ellery Lake Bowl that almost reaches the road at 0:50 and TPR barely peeking out of the snow at 1:14....:D

Yea dude, its gtg lol....

I don't mean to be rude but did you realize you were looking at 50' drifts on the road a few weeks ago? That means they are only 45' now...and very compact wet snow.

This is what the drifts were like on the Virginia Lakes road ~2 weeks ago:

The ones on Tioga pass are as deep or deeper with Avie haazard...I wonder if they are even ready to work on the worst ones just by Ellery Lake.

Given the unprecedented amount of water in the snowpack (increased wet slide danger coupled with difficulty of removal) and TM campground late estimated opening date, my prediction is mid July.
It also looked like a cabin might be missing at TPR. Hard to tell for sure, but highly likely one finally went flat.

We spent 4 days up at Mt. Dade/Bear Creek Spire last week, and the skiing was pretty horrible after about 8am, due to warm temps on all aspects. We were getting up at 4:30am, but it didn't help much. The snow surface froze a couple inches due to radiative cooling overnight, but it was extremely warm at our camp at 11,000'. Lots of wet slides on S and SE aspects. There was okay skiing on N facing slopes before 9am above 12,000'.

We drove up the closed road (during after hours for road clearing) to Virginia Lakes last Friday and bailed on the skiing, as it was so warm. Could see wet runnels everywhere. Looking at the Snotel data it has frozen for just a few hours over the last week at 9500'.

So much for spring skiing, unless it cools off. Climate change in full effect. The warm temps suck after such a big snow year.

My guess is July 12th for an opening date.

Kunlun shan, thanks for reality check. Same thing here at Lassen. No overnight freeze and f*#king hot and wet runnel slopes impossible to wax for. Fortunately a cooling trend has started and supposed to be 20 degrees cooler than a day or two ago.
I might go back on Friday.
Field teched near Lassen in Mineral yesterday and today. Winter has left Mineral
