Welsh-American student, come across an opportunity to work in the Fraser Valley area over the summer.
Anybody have any knowledge of the climbing if any in the area? I've had a scout and found some areas nearby, "Hurd Creek" and "Creek Side", and can't decide if they're choss or not...
Also, is there anywhere to train in the Fraser Valley area that's not the shitty looking rec center? Hoping to get away somewhere bigger at the end and would rather not be completely out of practice.
Also.. anybody looking for summer partners in the area? :)
Cheers all.

I have scouted around "Frazer Valley"... California and found nothing, except some chossy small formations.

I climbed there a bit in the early 80's.The headwaters area of the Fraser River{hike up railroad tracks off of US 40} had some very cool eratics and undeveloped walls. From what I am told there is a bunch of stuff developed by now.
If you need some beta talk to my friend Andy Brumenschenkel at his brewery ,Hideaway Park in the winter park village.Tell him I sent you.
Then let us know,Aye?

I climbed there a bit but would rather climb else where. Lots of mountains but not much climbing. There is some sport routes above tabernash and some scraggy trad on the pass. Potential for alpine is huge in the indian peaks.

Never got a chance to talk to Andy at the brewery (truthfully I forgot, and was without wifi for most of the summer), but I'm glad to report that it's not such a bad place to climb.
The two main local crags are solid gneiss single pitch sport outcrops of good quality. The closest off the highway (40) is called Trail Creek, and it's got some steeper jug fests as well as more delicate vert face climbs.
Further away is Hurd Creek (maybe 30 mins drive in a 4x4 vehicle into the forest). Many more routes (steep for the most part, with even a couple decent trad lines) that I would have loved to explore more than I did.
Both were brilliantly equipped with nice shiny bolts and lower offs. Amazing effort Jim Shaw and local developers. Made my summer a damn sight more pleasant than it would have been otherwise.
The forest in that area is pretty well scattered with similar small gneiss outcrops that invite further development!
Not a place to travel for, but if you're in the area, pay it a visit.
Cheers guys.

Haha, I spent some time in the pubs, don't worry ;)
Also, (how could I forget), I spent an afternoon jogging/hiking up to the devil's thumb formation on the divide that you can see from the bottom of the valley. It's not far off mount Jasper, and not the same devils' thumb that is over in the front range.
It clocks in at a soft but scary 5.7 and was one of the most memorable solos of my life! You could lob some gear in if you wanted to but the whole thing is just so precariously balanced I think I'd be scared to, not to mention hauling the gear+ropes up to 12000+m..! Great way to spend an afternoon/day but watch out for storms and lunch-stealing Marmots.
