There IS a way to unsubscribe yourself, so that you can NO LONGER retrieve your password. I just tried and confirmed that this method works for this test account.
pud, you need to create a "throway" email account that you will use only for ditching the Taco. Once that email address has been created, you change the email address that's associated with "pud" to the throwaway email, and login at the new email account to confirm this change .
Then, as John M suggested upthread, create a new random password by typing a bunch of gibberish, and use this to change the password for BOTH your ST account, and the throway email account.
Don't save the gibberish you used for the password, and you will no longer be able to login to the throwaway email account or ST.
edit - Of course you DON'T really want to go out silently, and have STers think you might have acquired some discipline and self control. :)

Based on my testing, there's a quicker way to make your "pud" account irretrievable.
Type up some gibberish to generate a long random password that you then replace your ST password with. Log back into the account with the new gibberish password, and change your ST email address associated with "pud" to info@whitehouse.gov, or any other email address that won't end up hijacking your ST account.
ST will replace your old email address with whatever you type into the email address field on your account. No confirmation needed. Delete the gibberish, so you can't change your mind, and you're outa here!
