I've been creating and illustrating a cook book for climbers, going to print it in June..
but I realized it wouldn't be complete without recommendations for where to eat out for the days you don't feel like cooking.

I know the best place to eat in Italy's Finale Ligure - a tiny osteria with the best three course dinners you've ever eaten.
The place to get pizza in the Verdon (with the crazy Spanish guy at the bend in the road)
The New Paltz Bakery for the Gunks,
Or the free hot chocolate in front of the womens' bathroom at the Ahwahnee in Yosemite.

But what do you think are the best (perhaps hidden?) places to eat?
I'd love to know!

To give you an idea, this is what the book will look like:

Does that book have a list of the people that will be cooking for climbers?

I need to make friends with them. :)

Pinnacles East or West side on the way back to the Bay Area, I stop at Super Taqueria in Hollister or Morgan Hill, respectively.

On Sonora Pass Highway, my house. My wife's an excellent cook (I do not like to cook).

I kinda like the ambience there too.

For most of the places I like to climb at my campsite is the best place to eat. But in the lower Kern there's the Kern River Brewing Company. The best ale and a great menu.

Looks like a cool book. How can we get a copy?

I like this quote, so in the trip reports I write, I have a fairly strict policy of describing the climbing and not the food.
Although I expect it could be extremely boring to describe what I eat!

Everyone loves the burger barn...but they don't get inspected and I always feel like sh#t after I've eaten there.

I prefer holy smoke BBQ, mahogany meats sandwiches, the Tai restaurant at the airport and upper crust pizza. Food is expensive in bishop...so cooking up some meats on a grill while watching the sunset is still the best option!

The best place at all of my favorite areas is at my Sportsmobile...I have a portable weber grill.
Pesto salmon, bison steaks and panko cod are among my favorites along with grilled asparagus, polenta or mashed potatoes and chopped salad. Oh, I almost forgot the wine...usually a malbec, syrah or pinot noir.

The Kasa Market and Taco Shop

The tacos are served in the back portion of the market and are excellent and cost effective.

It's all located in old town Yucca Valley at the western end near the hill down to Morongo Valley.

Joshua Tree National Park is to the east.

The Tracy General Store in Almo Idaho. They have a kitchen and dinning room like one you would find in a prairie home, and all homemade goods, fresh bread, daily specials. If you like grandma style old school food, this place is the best at City of Rocks! The steak house in Almo is good too. Meh on the pizza place although they do have a great beer selection.

Gary.....Grumpy Bear's??? If you're DESPERATE! The cheeseburger is the only thing going on and its average. Besides, it's on the wrong side of the Domelands. Folks that are likely to hit up the Domelands will be heading to Church Dome and the like. So for most people, coming through Kernville would be logical approach. Same holds true if people were to head to The Needles, Dome Rock, the Hermit, Rincon, Valhalla, Kern Slabs, New Directions, Ghost and Spirit Rocks etc. And, don't waste your time on Ponderosa. Sub-standard leftovers that is over priced, just like Grumpy Bear's

Better yet.....

Kern River Brewing Co - Kernville
Pizza Barn - Kernville
McNally's Burger Stand - 13 miles north from K-Ville (along the way to The Needles and Domelands). Their burgers are DEE-LISH!!

Honorable mention.....The Kernville Airport Café. Ask for "The Pilot" burger. 3/4 lb burger with the absolute works. Bring your appetite.....its the size of Rhode Island!

Best pork chile verde ever: parking lot stand at Mission San Xavier del Bac south of Tucson. Check it out if you're touristing or on the way to climbing at the Stronghold or birding anywhere around there.

I've traveled a lot in Mexico, I lived in the Mission district in SF for years, I pride myself on on my own chile verde; but the Tohono O’odham verde was the best. The woman who sold it to me was one way honed bad ass, seemingly, and she certainly captured my respect.
