Driving over 178 a couple times in the next week with a little time to kill. I am looking for old man bouldering (easy, short and with good landings), where should I stop?

Head up Rancheria near the mouth of the canyon. Just about every pullout provides access to some form of boulder or graffiti... However, if you have an MTB go west of the dam and cruise the roads in the Keyesville zone and you should happen upon many...

Have fun!!

Jon, do you wanna kill Donut?? He said 'old man easy', dood. Seriously, even past Keyesville (about another 2.5 miles, and before Wooford Heights), there is a sh*t ton of high quality boulders up on the hillside. Just be aware that its been warm out here around Kernville and the buzz worms are getting out. Spotted two yungins out above the James Store, while reconning the craglets above.

Thanks for the info. I looked at the MP link, "The Power of Fear" is not something I'm interested in experiencing, but the boulders near Keysville sound like that and some Wagon Wheel bouldering, and some DV bouldering will fill my heart with joy.

The James Store = The Sierra Gateway. Right across from the brewery.

John Newman and Herb Larger put in a few routes along the old Harley Mine mule trail.

Thanks mooch I was thinking about the little groc in the vicinity of the road to Greenhorn/Alta Sierra, Wofford Heights zone. Spent a lot of time there in the 80s and haven't been there since 91 or so. Good to know there is a brewery now!

You should come here. I'm off the next four days. BC skiing and mountain biking is good too.

A few miles west of Walker pass, is the Chimney peak road. Turn north on this and drive 3/4 mile to where the road turns right. From this point, the bouldering is all along the hillside, for the next mile or so, extending up to the cliffs up high. Many cracks are present along with many high quality face gems. Feel free to hit me up for more info.

Lurking Fear, I just noticed your post after drooling over Levy's photo. I am going to a memorial in Death Valley for my uncle and my time is limited. I would love to visit and ski but it's going to have to be another time. I am supposed to ski on Lassen and Shasta with Megan later this spring, but I bet I could convince her to ski around your area, especially if tell her she could get instruction and guiding from one or two PSIA pros and former mountain guides.

Doughnutnational, camping is free at the Walker Pass campground, about 3 miles east of Chimney peak road, just below the pass. In the past we camped right there at the boulders, on little spur roads that take off from the Chimney peak road , but these are now closed off by signs. The BLM ranger says its OK to camp in the old spots, you just have to leave your vehicle on the main dirt road.

You guys are always welcome. I just did my best attempt at being a dirtbag by stepping down from my salaried job and "just" working three twelves a week, so I have a lot more time off.

Donut..... Levy speaks the truth, that little cliff band has given birth to a whole bunch of good boulders.

and the free CG is a nice place to stop and bivi... find a spot as hi up the loop as you can.... lots of people roll through at all hours of the night, to use the out-house while traveling, so its a constant stream of headlights on your tent.

As always... "the higher you are the better"

and remember .... the Black Planets are good bouldering also.
