From back when the very first ascents of El Cap were being done, when asked why doing a wall from the ground up was better than siege tactics with fixed ropes.
"Because that is the way to get the most joy from the climb"

Why are we eating these flavorless crackers and drinking nothing but tea?

This question should have been asked of Royal on the 2nd ascent of the Dawn Wall. However, it was not. I could have presented his answer as: "Because I just got back from Britain and this is what they eat and drink on climbs."
He didn't answer the never-posed question. I, however, will offer my fictional answer, "Geez, Royal, whatever happened to cheese and sardines"?

I never forgave him for only bringing net hammocks - one does not retrieve dropped M&Ms from a net hammock.

I must admit that he did brew hot tea every evening. I don't remember how he did it, but he did.

You are a great man Royal.
