Locker:
Yup.

Nobody knows me from shyt. But everyone knows the blue truck. That's cool. I estimate the volunteer teams in the area take out more than 100 tons a year. Tomorrow I have another chipping job in the Pit.
I am tempted to go to the enforcement people and ask if each volunteer can get a nice red cape to wear. But I am sure she will look up at me, over her reading glasses, and say

"No capes."

What I really could use is a pair of rocket boots.

Tuesday update:
The brush has all been chipped up and spread on the access way at Sunset and Hillview. The area used to feature climbing rope across these and I provided rope for both but did not stretch it between the posts. I need to talk to Wally and find out whether there is an easement. I will leave the tent till I have established whether or not it is being used. I don't need to cause additional problems for the homeless.

I can't sustain the kind of time this parcel is requiring.

BAd,

You're going to have to update us on how the transition goes for you. Yes, it will make most of us wildly jealous but why not?!

At this point I can only hope that Medicare will still be around when I need it (not too soon)...that's my biggest fear especially after seeing what major medical expenses looked like for my Dad, who had Medicare and good supplemental insurance at the time (full PPO). He even had prescription discounts through the VA but the costs were still insane. And this was 9-15 years ago!

Gotta hope for the best but plan for the worst!

Jstan,

I see the angle you are coming from for your "outrage". My earned SSA benefits will cover about 80% of my planned retirement spending, taxation with reasonable withdrawals is very low under a modest withdrawal scenario. I am aware that large IRA withdrawals can cause SSA benefits to become partially or mostly taxable, but were that to occur I would have to have RMD's that were so big as to cause me to be taxed a lot.

I can only DREAM I have such a problem! I would LOVE to pay $1M in taxes, a truly first world problem.

So your alarmist statements will only hold true for those who have the awful problem of needing far less money than their IRA is holding. Aww shucks!

@Phyllis: email sent.
@Crusher et al.:

I'm down to eight official working days + one for graduation, give or take. There's a short meeting in there somewhere. Anyway, that's the number for in the classroom, cracking heads.

This time is rather surreal and a little tense in that a huge part of my life is on the verge of going away. Some parts of my professional life I will miss--great colleagues and friends, the students who aren't psycho, whiny, lazy, etc. I've always felt that a good day in the classroom was as good a day as I could ever have--really phreakin' awesome. I love it. But it always comes with punishments: stacks of crappy, crappy papers, the aforementioned problem students and the emotional turmoil of dealing with them. And here's another challenge of trying to be a good instructor: To do the job well, to have genuinely high standards means that you are going to have to tell some nice, sometimes very hard working students that they aren't good enough. You have to be the reality check, the guardian at the gate who says, "Sorry, bud. No go for you." I won't miss being the crusher of dreams and flimsy self-esteem--a term my low-level remedial students sometimes write as--no joke--"self-of-steam" or "self-steam"! I won't miss reading a paper and thinking, WTF? So often I'm confronted with a gulf between where they are and where they need to be that the job seems impossible. So many students are so far behind that the job I've been given can't be done, at least much of the time.

So, yeah, won't miss that. Or the BS from administration. So much edu-crap. Gawd.

I'll write more later. Gotta go workout in the garage. I've got some climbs to prep for. :)

Bad, thanks for yer service. Hope yer karma blossoms commensurately.

On a more prosaic note the S&P 500 is set for a new record; time to convert more equities to bonds and cash.

question -- my mom (70s) is in retirement and has a modest-sized retirement portfolio somewhere b/w $500 k and $1 M I'd guess. It's 90% stocks 10% bonds/cash. I'd like to see her reallocate to a more balanced portfolio (say two-thirds stocks). My question is, what is the best way to do this from a tax perspective? I guess not do it all at once, but I think the market peak is unsustainable and I want to see gains locked in.

anyway I don't know anything about investments or risk or retirement

Call Vanguard. They've recently changed their advisor system so that now yer mum can get a personal advisor who can re-allocate with an eye towards tax efficiency. This should be done SOON as she is WAY overly invested in equities! She should be closer to 50/50 as any Vanguard advisor will tell her.

T Hocking: BAd; You summarized our profession quite well, . . . .

There might be differences of opinion about that.

One point to make: teach in other countries and in other universities in this country. I think you’ll find different students.

Second point: teach people in other generations. Same thing.

Third point: much of the experience is attitudinal.

Be well.

My aspirations are to retire ASAP. I am keeping my lifestyle down so I can pull it off. I see ~$50k a year being plenty to live on in retirement once the house is paid off, so that is my goal. I should be able to pull it off before I turn 50.

Trump just announced big tax cuts. Best to get out of equities as quick as possible.

Wow, only 45 years before retiring! That's what I call a Positive Attitude.

MikeL is correct. There's a huge variety of teaching experiences in this country. Sycorax is an English teacher and she seems very positive. I enjoyed my years as a college math prof, having retired 17 years ago.

I take 6 months off every couple years. I don't really look forward to any specific retirement since I take "mini-retirements" all life long.

if you think in these terms:

work; produce; retire; rest.

then you're all ready eliminated.
