I knew I was going to get some blow-back (hoping it wouldn't come from the Master, though:>). I really am a bad boulderer for my overall climbing ability.

I started bouldering in my mid-fifties. I did learn to climb at Woodson but I always thought Woodson was more like climbing than bouldering.
I boulder in a good boulder only gym and I really enjoy it, more than outside bouldering. I sucked at first but have improved t a point that I can cruise some V3s and can sometimes sniff out a V4 I can do. I do not do much outside bouldering, I would rather do "real" climbs with string and those clippy things.
Being older means getting injured easier and taking a long time to heal.

^^^ Good point. Over age 60 it's not smart to jump off things, no matter how many pads. And yes, I know, there are 90 year-olds who pop off fifteen feet up and bounce right on up to their feet.
Perhaps not.
(Well, that's what Kerwin used to tell us about those Europeans before he retired from the forum)

Ok WyoRockMan/ thanks for responding.
Holy sh¡t WOT Warning!
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
Dang dude, if you have that much bouldering at your disposal, surely you can craft
a bouldering experience that avoids all the sh¡t the people on here bitch about, like a "scene".
Surely not every sector among 700 problems is a scene, or only desperate problems.
Do you like exploring? If there are 700 problems, there are definitely more! Exploring adds a whole new and, shall I say, "valid" aspect to bouldering. This is what really drives me these days.
In your post you asked people how they learned to like bouldering.
So far you've mostly gotten testimonials about not liking bouldering,
most I would disregard! :-) especially if you're looking to get into bouldering.
Some funny stuff, for sure, lots of generalizations and out of touch bits in there.
Saying that bouldering is wasted talent! And that their skill should be put to use doing "real" climbing {{{LOL}}} good one bro.
Since I'm baked and feeling generous, and because none of these barnyards are giving you any real tips for learning to love bouldering, here's the 411:
1. Grow a f ucking manbun.
2. Watch tons of sick footie until you're frothing.
3. Skinny jeans.
4. Cannabis, lots of it.
5. Tunes. I don't care if you're into Sonny and Cher, find your send music.
6. When you clean your house, do it with a toothbrush- perfect endurance training for brushing holds, which you'll spend 75% of your time doing while seshing.
7. Do you own a puffy? Yes you do, you're from WYO. Puffys are clutch.
8. Instagram.
9. Practice staring at your tips. (I recommend doing it at work.)You'll spend 20% of sesh time doing this.
10. 2nd car for pads.
11. Vocalization. Find yours. Dig deep. Get natural. Find your grunt and own it brah. It doesn't even have to be an "OTTTT" or a "PSSSSSATT", it can be an "EEEK". We understand! It's yours! We support each other in bouldering.
12. Use the word sector.
These should enhance your experience.
But-
If you don't like it, you don't like it. If you want to like it,
f ucking make it happen!!!
This is from yesterday.
Hiking around looking for boulders. It's fun. And it doesn't have to be hard to be fun.
Scratches the itch for me.

Jefe- That's a great picture you painted there! It's tilted to the younger, idealistic boulderers that haven't been beaten down by the rigors of life.
Old man boulderers looks more like Mike Pence and less like Ragnar Rothbrook or a Celtic warrior with a man bun.
No puffy needed, old men don't get cold-so a monogrammed flannel from a local building supply shop will do.
Crash pads are frowned upon, mostly because we're pulling on easy 12 foot hand cracks in sticky's (approach shoes) and long, easy slab solos are not beneath our efforts.
The old man scene is not tribal, it's anti social and partly fueled by avoidance issues (honey-do list, etc.). In fact, going out alone is an expectation.
We get high in parallel- Due to being entrenched in geriatric routine, each guy has his own smoke kit and very specific way of getting high.
Old men think they look sooo cool wearing magnet braces on their knees and elbows.
Oh and Jefe, I know how you hate politard threads but sitting in rock cave, blazed and arguing politics between sends is a huuuge part of old man bouldering.
Due to hating people in general, we rarely cut trails wide enough for a crash pads (on purpose) and the entrances are hidden from young lurking hotshots.
Facebook and Instagram are absolutely out- the group text picture to your partners while they're miserable at work is permitted.
As one of my friends says, "It's a connoisseurs game". This was validated when I went to the Needles a few years back, ran into an old local that has notable, rope climb FA's all over the area, yet we spent a pleasant day on his local circuit, "old man" bouldering.

Hahahahaha drew and Jefe classic.
For me the key to liking bouldering is to find a problem that you think is beautiful and inspiring. Let the grades and "getting better at climbing" come later. Find a boulder problem that really makes you say Wow! If you don't find a boulder that makes you feel that way, stick to routes. Life's short:)

Q: Bouldering, why is it so hard?
A: Sit down starts, if you start standing up or better yet on a pile of pads many problems are much more doable.

Ditch the grades and the expectations and just boulder for fun. It's amazing, moving over stone, as the DR sez.
If you are focused on the difficulty of it all, then yeah, it's difficult. No big brain needed to figure that one out.

The morning stoke is high thanks to you guys.
1) Manbun. I’d love to rock that sexy look but my hair falls more into the old man/Telly Sevalas look.
2) Can never get enough footy!
3) Skinny jeans?! Dude, that sh|t will get your ass kicked in WY
4) Oh cannabis. I know for a fact that would help. Stupid job hunting has me on sabbatical.
5) Tunes. Earbuds or blasting through a blue tooth speaker?
6) Firm or soft bristles?
7) Puffy. Check. Check. Check. Is this thing on?
8) IG. <3 that.
9) Tips. Recommended salve?
10) Dude, once again WY. I can haul all the pads I need in my TRUCK.
11) Wolf howl or grizzly bellow. I’ll get that sorted.
12) Sector. Area. Send o rama. Gnarnia.
They say it takes 21 days to form a habit. I think I need to use that approach to enjoying bouldering.
30 years of dabbing in it and not “liking” it. A full reset on expectations and a PMA are in order.
Maybe it sticks. I hope so, I know it can be fun.

Randomly there is no such thing, as "bouldering" ; it is all rock clamberin'
How it looks before you send
How it looks after sendin' It
a time or two.
BIG HOLDS AT THE TOP ARE 'NICE'
Down climbing is more dangerous.
Broken heels! Will change your life.
